Windows 7 conflicts with Vista

I have seen quite a fair few examples where Windows 7 does not play nice with Vista

I disconnected my Vista Hard-drives and installed Windows 7 on a seperate Hard-drive and later reconnected it so I could access my data however after I reconnected the hard-drives and used WIn7 to browse directory's like My Downloads and My Documents it seems some 7 features have either leaked into Vista or Vista has done things cause by Windows7 making changes to the datastreams and metadata

I have seen Windows 7 deactivate Vista`s Activation, I have seen the "Shared with" display on Windows 7`s explorer`s menu leak into Vista and I have seen Windows 7 make a few other undesired changes to my Vista partition...

This one is a huge one too...I noticed if you try using the Repair menu on the Vista DVD and you have two partitions, one with Vista and one with Win7 the VistaDVD`s repair options are completely unable to detect any operating system installed and prevent you from fixing problems with wither Vista or Windows 7 rendering the entire recovery menu on the DVD completely useless

Has anyone else noticed how Windows 7 either conflicts or breaks Vista?

I haven't noticed anything but I also haven't ran vista in 3 days. I'll check it out when I boot vista later today or tomorrow.

I also kept on looking at your horse with 2 legs.

Oh yeah :)

When I tried using system backup from within 7 the other day, It automatically selected Vista as well. Same deal from within Vista as well. The PITA aspect was that I couldn't deselect one of the OS'es from the backup image. (Can't remember which one).

Making 7 bootable without having the Vista drive connected was also a big PITA. I had to go into Linux just to be able to copy the Boot folder and BCD.

As much as I'm liking 7, it's caused nothing but headaches for me. Then again, I've had a generally all round sh*t week for computing :p

The way I got around having to reformat was to create a small partition, install another copy of Vista and viola! Original Vista installation is magically re-activated.

I have tried a dual boot with Vista on separate partitions and on separate hard drives. I would not have any reason to disconnect a hard drive so i have not tried it. I have not experienced any of the mentioned problems so far.
I know when Vista was in beta, there was a problem on dual boot, but maybe not quite what is referred to. Whatever MS OS was on the otherside of the dual boot (XP 98 etc) it corrupted the vista restore and vice versa. The remedy then was to selct separate paths for the restores.
Fwiw. I am running a triple boot at the moment, also without problems. Vista 64 and 32 and 7. I should add that I use an image program(Acronis) and not the rstore facility.

Interesting :geek:

Can somebody with the Vista activation problem try an sfc /scannow now in vista

Hello all....:)

I know you asked for someone that is having problems; but you made me curious and this is what I came up with.
I ran this in Vista.

@ Ted that means it's fine.

The people having Vista activation problems - are your installs from Retail or OEM copies of Vista?

I would think that you would get that in 7 due to modifying the system files for the taskbar etc ;)

Yes; thank you I thought as much. I'm going to start another thread to ask y'all some questions on another subject. I didn't mean to get into the middle of this one I was just trying to be helpful.

Steven is your Vista OEM or Retail? as we fixed SK's OEM Vista deactivation problem with a retail key.

I didn't have any Vista deactivation probs (my vista is retail) which makes me think that W7 is somehow making some Vista OEM's think that they are retail.

Mine is an OEM version.

I don't know how relevant it is, but the drive I originally installed the Beta on was a 'primary' partition and not a 'system' partition. My old Vista drive was a 'system' partition and so was my 'Linux' drive which had it's own bootsector. I couldn't actually make my 7 drive bootable by itself without having one or the other 'system' drives connected. According to the 7 installation set up screen anyway.

But there has to be some setting in the boot records that is being tricked into de-activation.

This time I was clever (new system, new HDD) I installed the 7 beta first and then Vista. No activation problems ;)

My Vista is OEM however its also Retail...The BCD store is readonly and the bootstring to keep it permanently activated after first activation cant be changed in this state...I havnt got the deactivation bug yet but Im thinking it is setting this boot-string to false and causing problems for others :(

ok it looks like im gonna have to reinstall W7 :(
i decided to update it & then i rebooted ...WHY did i bother it was running perfectly  now all i get is a black screen at the desktop, windows IS loaded but i cant see anything except my cursor & the watermark..??, i can pull up the task manager with no problems, it just seems like the desktop switched off...:sarc:

i cant do anything in safe mode either, b/c there is no desktop there either

don't suppose anyone has any ideas before i have to reinstall..
