Solved Windows Installer - can't install ANY msi package

I was able to find a restore point that got me working again. In my case, I believe it was the Epson printer drivers for my Epson Workforce 600. It installs a suite of software; not sure which was the culprit.

Hi,

just wanted to report that the same thing happened to me today. It seems that it happened when I tried to install the Mirror's Edge game. The game automatically installs (among other things) the C++ 2005 32 bit redistributable, and after this installation failed (causing the entire game installer to crash), I haven't been able to install anything without a crash. Not so nice :(

Ditto,
Been following this thread as well. Last thing i installed was OpenOffice 3.0

Hope someone from MS reads this!

Whaddaya think?
I can't believe this!
Two hours ago i reinstalled Windows 7. Everything was ok, but now i have the same problem again! Programs installed in this short time
Picasa 3
Firefox
Winrar
Foobar
TheKMPlayer

Nothing else. So, the solution must be other: a new, clean installation of windows 7 isn't a long-term solution.

Any help?

Well, I did the restore and things started working again... but then as soon as I installed something else, now I've got the same problem over again. At least I have my "essential" programs already installed.

i think they found a solution:

start regedit
navigate to HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions
rename MachineThrottling to _MachineThrottling

Finally we have a solution and its working. I was on that forum few hours ago but the solution was recently posted. Though looking at it you think how does it relate to problem we were having. But it works. Cheers guys.

Heh. No idea why this fix would work. I'm happy, though. Solved my headache for the day. However, we'll probably figure out later that it broke something else. ;-)

Problem with MSI installers (started recently)

Please try deleting the following registry key and running setup for your applications again:

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SQMClient\Windows\DisabledSessions

yeah the renaming fix works, just tested by installing live mesh and it worked perfectly.
