I'm getting random Blue Screens and can't figure out why. I'm not running any hardcore programs. I'm mostly just using Microsoft Office and Firefox. The BSOD's seem to happen when I'm in Outlook, Excel or Firefox. Haven't been able to determine exactly which at the time as I'm moving back and forth between them quite often.

I've tried the SFC command and it didn't find anything. I used BlueScreenViewer but not a lot of help. All drivers for sound and video have been updated. I've also updated the firmware to the Crucial M4 SSD version 040H.

Any insight would be great.

Update the firmware of your Crucial M4-CT256M4SSD2.

And, Uninstall McAfee Using McAfee Removal Tool. Use Microsoft Security Essentials as your antivirus with windows inbuilt firewall, and free MBAM as the on demand scanner.
Download, install and update those, and then run full system scans with both of them, one by one.

Free up the startup.

  1. Click on the Start button
  2. Type “msconfig (without quotes), click the resulting link. It will open the System Configuration window.
  3. Select the “Startup” tab.
  4. Deselect all items other than the antivirus and touchpad driver SynTPEnh.
  5. Apply > OK
  6. Accept then restart.
Let us know the results.

Arc,

Thank you for the reply.

I have updated the firmware on my M4 from 000F to 040H which is the latest version.

I'm running McAfee b/c it's the antivirus we use at work (runs on the network) so i'm not sure i can uninstall w/o repercussions. Do you think i have a virus that it's not picking up?

You also make reference to the touchpad driver. Do you think it might be giving me some issues? There are a couple of updates via the HP Support Assistant for the Synaptics TouchPad Driver that I've not done b/c i didn't think i needed them.

I don't get a lot of BSOD's but when it happens it's annoying.

Thanks,

No, not that. But McAfee's file system monitoring system in Blocking the storage access, which is contributing to your BSODs. A very regular cause of BSOD, one of the regular nonsense that McAfee does :)

No, touchpad driver is not a problem. I suggested to remove all the startup entries, but Keep MSC and touchpad driver, as the touchpad driver is needed to be auto-started with windows. It it is also removed, you will be at a problem using the touchpad after a restart :)

Let us know the situation when you are done :)
