The Audio Service is not running

I have a red tag on the speaker icon an the message says "The Audio Device is not running". However I have sound when I test even on Skype. What gives?

Just moving the slider a bit got rid of the red cross. An apparent bug in W7. Can live with this one tho.

SP1 has been out for a while with no improvement. Unfortunately, this is the sort of bug that goes WAY DOWN on the priority list until lots of people bitch about it. One thing that I've noticed is that I have only experienced it with 32 bit W7. I use a variety of version levels (home, pro, ultimate) and level does not seem to be an impact.

This problem is still hanging around.
Win 7 Home Prem.
Only just appeared this morning after shut down last night.
Everything still works OK but have red/white cross over speaker by clock.
