Hi, I have several image files on my desktop (jpeg/gif etc) that when right clicked give me an option to open with a program of my choice, depending what I want to do with the file.

I have a couple of png files and dont have the same "open with" right click option. I have read several registry hacks which allow the files to be opened with a particular application, but I want to choose which one. How can I add the option to open with for these png files? Thanks

I think he meant that when he select more than one image, the Open with... option doesn't appear.

I think it's because Windows doesn't know that all files you selected are images and by some kind of logic, he doesn't know that you can open it all with...let's say Paint...because you can open an image but you can't open an .exe file with paint, right? (Hope I was clear.)

Correct if we're not thinking the same and I'm wrong, but I don't think there's a solution for this.

Hello John,

This may be what you are after. It will show you how to add a program to the "Open with" menu.

I think the OP means that when he right clicks on a single PNG file then the "Open With" option doesn't show. It should so I would suggest the following:
Clikck the Start button, type cmd in search box, right click on cmd.exe that appears at the top of the small window, click "Run as Administrator" You might have to agree to this, then type "sfc /scannow" without the quotes (Note the space after sfc!) at the command prompt and let it run. Do this 3 times and see if that cures the problem.

I dont have the OPEN WITH to start with. I know how to add programs to the open with sub menu, but I want the open with option when I right click a png file just like I have with a jpeg.

Update: I had a look in in my list of file associations, and the PNG extension is not listed, so I copied the file to anothe win 7 pc where the PNG extension was listed in associations, and voila the open with option is available when I right click it.

This may be a silly question but does this mean the png file is not registered on the original win7 pc, and if so how do I do it?

Associate

You won't get the "Open with" option unless the file extension is associated with a program.

Set a Default Program (choose any appropriate program) and then you should get the "Open with" option in your context menu.

It should have been associated with Paint (or the default picture viewer).

If it doesn't exist at all, you could try restoring the default file association using the Reg file on this page:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/19449-default-file-type-associations-restore.html

The png file is about 1/3 of the way down the page. :)

Hey thank you.
I made "Paintshop Pro" file association preferences point to PNG files and now I have the same OPEN WITH choices I have with my other image files. Ill certainly remember that one, excellent work, and thanks again.
Definately Solved

Hi, Am delighted your problem is now resolved. You can run the sfc /scannow command anytime. It won't effect your updates unless one of them got corrupted. Then it will hopefully correct the issue. It is quite safe to run it anytime and is often the first point of call with problems like yours. You found the solution anyway but running the command may well have found the solution anyway!
