Goodbye Mac, Hello ASUS. Need help getting online :x

I am a video editor and finally got sick of Apple and their rip off prices. I purchased this ASUS on ebay: Asus K53E 15", i5-2450m, 3.10GHz Turbo, 4GB, 500GB Laptop

I am new to PC's but this has window 7 and turning it on I cant even get online :x

With my mac, Kindle and Phone I just turned them on and a list of wireless networks popped up and I connected. With my ASUS it doesnt have networks popup and Im not sure how to connect. Plugging the ethernet cable straight in to the computer doesnt do it either. I guess with a PC you have to set other things up before you can hop online? Can anyone walk me through the steps? I dont know the information for any of my wireless/internet settings, its all just been click and connect before. Someone said a PC might not even have a wireless card? could this be the case? any help? Thanks and sorry for being so new to the PC/Windows world

You could go buy a wireless adapter, they just plug in through USB.

Did you turn the wireless on ? A blue light should come on when it is. Did you read the manual that came with it, should be something about it in there.

Who`s wireless service are you tryin to connect to ?

Open up device manager and look at the network connections and see if there are any problems.

Plugging in with an ethernet cord should work, don`t know why it isn`t.

Open up network & sharing center and click on troubleshoot, see if it does anything.

Wireless isn't exclusive to Macs at all.
On the startrb:click it, on the right click control panel, in the upper right click show large icons then find netwrok and sharing center. There will be some options there to configure your wired and wireless. It's likely you will have to set the wireless up for you specific connection, being different from the previous owners'.

I bought this on ebay and it doesn't have a manual. Under the mousepad there is a few icons and the light is on next to the wireless icon but I dont see anything in the computer to show it has wireless and that I dont need a wireless card. When i do troubleshoot the only problem is that it ssays the ethernet cord is not plugged in, even if it is.

When i go here i can click "connect to the internet/set up a wireless, broadband or dial-up connection... When i choose this option my only option is create new connection and the only one showing up is Broadband (PPPoE)/connect using DSL or cable that requires username and password.


My apartment has free internet. When i moved in i plugged in my mac and a thing popped up where I created a name and password that i use to log in to. This doesnt work if I try to manually type it in on my ASUS but it shows up on phones and ipads and other devices. I dont know my ISP or any of the other weird abbreviations the ASUS asks for.

Can you click the "Connect to a network"?
Also from the Start orb go back to Control Panel and click "Device Manager", find "Network Adapters" and expand it to see if you indeed have wireless installed, most lappies in the last 7-8 years have it.

The OP ebay link shows: New Other, Mint Condition, close out on sale, don't have original box ...
Do you know for sure if this a NEW PC, or is it used, a Floor model Demo ???

If you are not sure is it brand new and never used, you might consider re-installing Windows.
No telling what might have been done by someone if it is not brand new...
Make sure you have a valid COA sticker on the laptop with a readable license key!

If this ASUS - K53E is your lappy, download the manual, it does have wireless 802.11b/g/n built in.

I don't know why the "eManual" is over 200MB, though.

The specs for the K53E claim that it has integrated WiFi (802.11 b/g/n). If the drivers are installed for it, the laptop should detect the wireless routers in the neighborhood.

If you use an Ethernet (hardwired) connection, the network should be just there. The network adapter also needs drivers, but it's likely that Windows would have included them.

Have you looked in the Device Manager control panel? Both the Ethernet and wireless adapter should show up under network controllers.

On my ancient (2008) Compaq laptop (a real cheapie, when it was new) there's a button next to the power button. When the machine detects a wireless network, the button is lit blue. (The button can be pressed to turn off the wireless adapter.)

I can't explain your problems. You shouldn't have to jump through a lot of hoops to connect. If you use an Ethernet cable, you shouldn't have to do much of anything at all. Using WiFi isn't much harder.

it looks brand new, he had windows installed so he could give me microsoft office but i dont see a single file other than office that would show he's been using it.

the only thing that shows under network adapters is: Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller

Where could i search wireless 802.11b/g/n to make sure it is still installed properly?

If it`s not in device manager it`s not installed. We will dig up the drivers for you.

Install the wireless LAN driver called Azurewave

Once you install that, you should have 2 network connections that show up in device manager, the wired and the wireless.

Remember ebay.
You need to know now that Windows 7 and Office are legal so you have the opportunity of refund if needed.

After installing the wireless driver from the Asus Support Downloads webpage for your model, click on the five bar wireless icon in your bottom right System Tray on desktop taskbar (shown below). A list of networks will pop up for you to connect to yours.

If not rightclick the same icon to run Troubleshooter which will tell you what is wrong.

Now read through the steps for getting a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7
so you can enjoy native Win7 performance without the poorly-written Asus bloatware and duplicate utilties which have better versions built into Win7. The factory preinstalled Win7 is one of the worst installs you can have. The link will give you an install better than 95% of them out there.

symbols inside Device Management ?

To get to Device Management :

Click on the rb: button

Type device manager inside the Search programs and files and press the <ENTER> button when you see Device Manager inside the Start Menu

If there are no "Error / Unknown" devices and the wireless adapter is not listed what does that indicate?
- The device is disabled in BIOS
- The built-in wifi chip does not work (defective)
- ???

Shouldn't be taking this long . They're a pretty good company . Number one on the motherboard side .
