System Update Readiness Tool is Not Working

I had a bunch of viruses on my computer. I think I got them all off with assistance, but Windows Update hasn't run for a long time. I attempted to download the system update readiness tool for the X64 version of Windows 7, but when I clicked the installer a dialog box popped up that said, "This update is not applicable for your computer." To further complicate matters, i'm almost totally blind and use the Jaws screen reader, so I have a hard time getting the error codes. If you'd like I can run the update again, but I need to know how to get a screen shot other than taking a picture with my camera, which would not work.

I called a tech support company and they did a diagnostic using remote access, and the lady said I had a bunch of corrupted and missing drivers, and the only way she could fix it was to download a bunch of advanced tools, and for that I had to purchase a package of at least one year of support, which I couldn't afford. I'd like to do this myself without having to get my harddrive wiped. Do you guys have any suggestions? Thanks.

I'm running the first reset you sent now, or I think it just finished, but I need some clearer instructions of how to get a screen shot. I know how to upload attachments on a vBulletin forum, but I can't use paint or any of those other programs that work with pictures because I don't have vision. Have you got another way? Thanks. Oh, also, since I have no vision, i also have a habit of using the computer with the monitor off. Will this effect the screen shot?

I'm going to try to run the update now and see how it works.

Okay I can't get Paint to open, but here's the screen shot, hopefully. i found out how to capture it and copy/paste it, but I have no idea if it will talk to me.

I have no idea whether that pasted or not, as it's not talking to me.

My apologies, I took being totally blind as an euphemism. My bad. There was no image posted. I'm sorry I'm not sure how you manage the PC, so not sure how to advise getting a screenshot. Generally in paint you paste the image from your notepad, then save to desktop for instance, then attach that using the forum, or an online site like tinypic. Hope that helps as you are way beyond me in operating the PC without vision. A Guy

Oh boogers. Yeah, i use a screen reader called Jaws for Windows. I found the keyboard shortcut to get a screen shot. I don't have Paint, so I just came back to the forum and hit control plus v. The bad thing is that Jaws won't let me select the error codes it gives me to copy and paste because I have to use the Jaws cursor to read it. Bah and grrrr!! I'm looking for someone to do remote access who knows what they're doing, but I'm having trouble finding someone who won't charge me an arm and a leg, lol. Not trying to sound like a jerk when I say that, it's just that being on a fixed income sucks, and I'm not a fan of reformatting, although that may be what I have to do.

Windows comes with paint. However you search, paint in the start menu search box and enter will open paint. A Guy

I just tried that, and hit dead air. All that came up were some files that had that word in the name. I also tried all programs, and hit dead air again.

I can connect via Teamviewer to try to get your Updates working, check over your Windows 7 and make other recommendations for optimizing it for best performance.

To feel comfortable with this feel free to ask all the questions you need for myself or others to answer so that you understand it fully. We are a team here and all volunteers, this is being offered only in case normal interactive support in a thread is not enough for you.

Here is a link to TeamViewer Download. When installed at defaults it allows a remote assistant to connect and communicate with you via several means while operating your PC nearly like normal.

By clicking on my name at left you can send a private message with the TV ID and password, then leave it open on your desktop.

If you can do that, that would be awesome. I've already got Teamviewer. That may be the best thing if it's not too much of a bother, as a lot of things you'll probably ask me to do won't be accessible to my screen reader. I'll set it up now, but can you e-mail me or something to let me know you're about to access my system so I can close my web site out and won't freak out when my computer starts talking weird things to me? If you can do this I'd greatly appreciate it. I've been looking for someone to help me with this for a while.

Were you just trying to access Teamviewer? I think we may need to try again, as I was typing and then it got all crazy on me.

You were unable to view or hear the TV chat or VOIP, but can now hear over speakers although your headset driver is not installed and likely cued in the stopped-up Updates. Waiting for reboot now from first batch of Updates to see if they'll install.

Just curious, are you still online with me after that second reboot?

Yes, after rebooting for Windows Updates it shows they all failed, and is running a Critical program Update now for your Jaws screen reader - which you said was problematic - so you probably cannot hear me via VOIP or read my notes.

I notice your ShutDown button is still queued with Updates which can mean that it needs an actual Shut Down to install the Updates. So we need to clear those, or try, to see if that will resolve your Updates problem.

If not will run the System Update Readiness Tool which has broken Updates Logjams like this before, possibly caused by the infection you reported. I ran a Malwarebytes Quick scan when first connected to confirm now clean. I also uninstalled the programs we discussed that look like Spyware and will run SuperAntiSpyware to make sure they are rooted out of registry.

So far the performance is decent over remote and have only noticed Mgmt console not found, though I got to Device Driver another way. You have drivers missing that may be in Optional Updates if we can get them running.

Still following along as I watch Greg work his magic ;)

Well Greg is made out of awesomeness. Sadly, it's gonna have to be reformatted. I'm in the process of zipping my music and videos and all that jazz so I can upload them to Skydrive, as the app refused to install, and I'm not uploading song by song unless I have to.

System Update Readiness Tool runs and seems to succeed but with nothing in its log, then it will allow a few small groups of Updates to install (up to half of 49) then it craps out again and fails during reboot. I've uploaded the cbs log here if anyone can help me decipher it: CBS log link: http://sdrv.ms/1115ZBL

Update: Every other small group of Updates seems to fail at reboot, so I run the REadiness Tool and/or Updates Troubleshooter and it allows them to install the next run.

I'm now down to SP1 and am hoping they work for it too. If not via Updates I have the Standalone downloaded.

Nope, after 12 hours of trying with reboots the last Updates including SP1 will not install no matter what combination of repairs I do in between. I'm hoping someone who knows how to read the log will spot something. If Jessie finds someone to help during the boot portion of Clean Reinstall we are ready to do that, too.

After sleeping on it I think one approach which should be doable without a helper is to run a Repair Install with the pre-SP1 installer files here X15-65805.iso.

After downloading that ISO, extract the files with 7zip to run Setup as Administrator from Desktop. This would not need participation in the boot mode. Although it does go into boot mode it starts and ends back at the desktop.

This should repair Updates and clear the way for installing SP1 which with the decent performance you have otherwise may be sufficient.

There is a risk with any install so I'd first use the CD your aunt provided to burn a System Repair Disc - Create with Windows Image Burner from the right click "Open With" menu when you click on the ISO.

I can do this for you via TeamViewer on Thursday, or we can wait til you get a helper to do the Reinstall.
