Hello,

History:

I have had a similar issue in the past with my last PC (which had serious issues and was replaced with this one that is only a few months old now) and got help from these forums, the problem was completely fixed but following the same steps does not work for me this time.

Post #20: http://www.sevenforums.com/bsod-help-support/280698-bsods-1000007e-116-a-2.html

Saurabh A was a great help and that fixed my old problem but will not work for this USB 3.0 issue and was wondering if anyone had similar problems and was able to fix them?

Problem:

USB 3.0 ports (front #6 and back #5) stopped working, when I plug my Western Digital 2TB Passport into the port it does not respond at all, like it has gone dead. This is the port I usually use for this device and have had no issues until now.

What I have done so far:

  • Uninstalled the USB 3.0 Host Controller and deleted the driver

  • Reboot the machine
This is what I see after following those steps and my USB 3.0 port is still not responding at all. I have right clicked it and tried to "Update" but it says it is the latest version.

Any ideas?

I have a similar USB 3.0 problem. Looks like it is a hardware problem on the motherboard. I have two front panel 3.0 ports, connected to the 3.0 port jack on the motherboard. If I plug my working 3.0 device (it works on another PC) into one port, it may work until I try to transfer data to the hard drive and then Windows drops the device or sometimes when I plug it in, Windows will display a message that the drive needs to be formatted (it does not). If I plug it into the second 3.0 port I get a Windows message that the device would work faster if plugged into a 3.0 port.

This PC has dual boot, Win 7 64 bit and Win 8 64 bit and it acts the same way on both, so its back to a motherboard hardware problem. I have two front panel USB 3.0 interfaces, the one on the Coolermaster case and a separate 5 1/4" slot interface that came with the Gigabyte motherboard. Both have the exact same problem so that also puts it back to a motherboard issue. I've reflashed the BIOS and that didn't help. I've updated the Intel USB 3.0 drivers and that didn't help (but as it appears to be hardware the drivers wouldn't help). The motherboard is a Gigabyte and I'm torn between having the PC down for a an extended period and getting it repaired/replaced under warranty or just forget it since I only have the one USB 3.0 device (an external hard drive).

I am following those steps now madcratebuilder, thanks for the link.

I am able to plug my WD 2TB Passport into the USB 2.0 ports and it works fine it's just the USB 3.0 port is dead now and not responding to anything being plugged into it, not even to charge my smartphone.

I really think that there is a motherboard issue .. touch the southbridge ( the square chip nwxt to the pci express x16 ) and check if it's overheating ... if it is then I recommend to buy a chip usb 3.0 adapter that pluged into the pci slot . Hope its been relevant to you .

After serious testing with my last PC and having the mother board replaced twice the issue still persisted. I had other issues with my last PC on top of the USB 3.0 issue, which was fixed in the other thread I linked.

My Mother Board temp is fine (Liquid Cooled) and has been tested using the Dell Utility program and a 3rd party program, both passed it without issue.

The USB port itself is fine.

The PC is a couple of months old and has had no other issue at all until today when I plugged my WD passport in and nothing happened. It does how work in the USB 2.0 slots...so has to be drivers for USB 3.0 I would think?

I personally think it is a driver issue and some incompatibility between my Smartphone, Western Digital 2TB Passport external hard drive and the USB 3.0 Host Controller Drivers.

I have managed to get this working again now and it was as I thought, a driver issue.

I did a full uninstall/delete of all drivers relating to the USB 3.0, reboot the PC, then installed fresh drivers from the manufacturers website, reboot it again and now my USB 3.0 port works.

I will leave this issue open for a few days to test then mark it as solved if no further issues arise with it.

I am from Australia and cannot use Newegg unfortunately and my Alienware system is only a few months old as I stated above, so I would void the Warranty if I replaced original parts and something was to happen to the system.

I would rather fix it than spend money replacing parts on a 2-3 month old system as powerful as this one!

No but you have model and idea buy from where you are !
