Hi I am a fairly capable person, fairly confident on my computer but don't always know all the jargon and abbreviations you guys use, so please bear with me.

I just had to do a clean system install as my computer was running slow and nothing else helped. It is running lovely in general now except that an old symptom from way back that I had solved (and cannot remember how) has returned.
When the computer powers down to save energy (if I walk away) usually I click the mouse and it wakes, but now it won't wake and the fans come on fully and they just don't stop until I press the power button to shut it down. Then when I start it up again it acts normal, no error message etc. Today it also seemed to shut itself down when I went out for a while and had left it on a dell diagnostic thing on the dell support website (that bore no fruit, didn't seem to do anything).

I wish for the life of me that I could remember what 'fixed' this before but it was a few years ago and being a mother of a small child I only have half a brain for remembering these things.

ETA it regularly now shuts itself down when left to sleep for a while, never had that before?

I really hope someone can help?

Hi Tigermama,

Welcome to Seven forums.

Please make sure that mouse is allowed to wakeup the system from the sleep mode. Check this link below which would help you:

Thanks for responding, I am on win 7 64 bit. Checked the mouse and it is set to allow to wake from sleep.

Sometimes I can walk away and come back shake the mouse and it wakes, sometimes I come back and the whole thing has shut down - then when I wake it it acts like nothing happened (no error messages), sometimes I come back and I shake the mouse or tap a keyboard key, and all the fans come on and won't stop, blank screen. I shut down then after a few moments start up and sometimes it 'resumes windows', and sometimes the mouse and keyboard light up but the display won't come on, I can turn the display off and back on again and still nothing, then at some point it comes back after a few more on-and-off's. So sometimes it feels like the computer has started up fine but the monitor hasn't, but I don't see how that causes the fans blaring on the times it won't wake at all?

The computer is set to the default 'Balanced' power settings.

It is so frustrating because I know this happened a few years ago and I did somehow find the solution, but now it has returned after a clean system install I can't for the life of me remember what it was.

I can say that whenever I have updated the ATI Radeon HD 4300/4500 driver package from the official website and it included catalyst control center, it used to cause all sorts of problems until I unstallled CCC and just kept the basics.

Thanks for the advice, I thought I had got the latest AMD driver but this was more recent
http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownloa...w-vista64.aspx

I am VERY reluctant to update the BIOS as when I first got this machine my brother recommended the same and when I updated to that version I had TERRIBLE problems (can't remember specifically). It took ages trawling through forums for us to find a way to uninstall and revert back to original version and the horribleness stopped so please don't think me ungrateful if I decline that suggestion.

Having now been explained what hibernation is I realise that the 'shutting down' that was happening on it's own was hibernation because as I started it back up again it would 'resume' windows and be back where I left off. That fact that it was hibernating is still weird because I had the power settings on default 'balanced' and it never used to do it before the clean install on same default settings. I have now adjusted them slightly put computer to sleep & turn off display to one hour each just so it doesn't happen quite so often. Hubby thinks that the whirring fans and black screen seems to happen when we actively put the computer to sleep rather than let it power down itself, but i can't be sure of that.

Hi Tigermama,

Thanks for your reply. I understand you have the latest video drivers and you don't wish to update the BIOS of the system.

You are correct as Hibernation would save all the files on RAM to the harddrive and shut down the system. And once you press the power button it would switch on the system and resume to the working state.

Whereas in sleep system would go in power saving mode and will supply power to only essential components of the system.

Check the below link which would explain in detail:

Hi there, the fact that it is hibernating has cleared up my confusion about it appearing to shut down, but I do still have this issue of it regularly not wanting to wake from hibernation / sleep, that when I click the mouse the screen doesn't wake and the fans whir up loudly and will not stop until I push and hold the power button which puts it back into hibernation again and I have to click it again to wake up, this is the main problem that bothers me.

Thanks

To try life without hybernating, get into an Admin elevated command prompt and just:

powercfg -h off

That's it, gone!

powercfg -h on

If you want it back.

I don't use it myself.

Fans on FULL sounds like straining the hardware when it's coming back alive, I'd just shutdown system completely if you are going to not be using for a while.

Adjust your power plans perhaps, otherwise.

Hi Tigermama,

System would not wake up with Mouse if it has been put to hibernation. As in hibernation system gets shut down and can only be powered on using the power button.

As suggested by Faladu: disable the hibernation and then check if system comes back normally from the sleep mode or not.

Kindly check this and let us know.

Hi,
problem still occurring, whenever the computer goes to sleep on waking I just get the whirring fans and no action until I press and hold power button to shut down and then start up afresh.

I have it on default balanced power settings but with display set to 15 mins and sleep set to 30.

I did have a look in BIOS to get some more info for you - I don't understand it but it may help;

BIOS Power Management:
ACPI suspend type S3 (STR)
Remote wake up is ON
Auto Power ON is DISABLED
AC Recovery is OFF

Advanced BIOS:
Boot up numlock status is ON

Integrated peripherals:
Onboard LAN boot Rom is DISABLED

these were just bits that jumped out as possibly relevent????

I would turn remote wake up to OFF, I doubt you want that, I use none of that stuff, just defaults.

Power Options, then advanced power options, I would look in there for something not quite right, perhaps.

It's not a place I mess with much and I have my sleep set to NEVER
I do have my hard drives sleeping (if idle) 20 mins that will wear them out faster if made never.

Hi Tigermama,

I understand that you are unable to wake up the system from the sleep mode yet. If the issue persists after following the steps from Faladu then kindly perform the steps below:

Try and switch from S3 to S1 state in ACPI SUSPEND in BIOS. Also, open control panel and go to

Power Options > Change plan settings in the preferred plan options > Advanced Power Settings

+Sleep

Allow hybrid Sleep > OFF
Allow wake timers > enable

+USB

USB selective suspend > ENABLE

+Multimedia Settings
+When Sharing media [This is the critical one]

Set to allow the computer to sleep.

Click apply and ok.

Please perform these steps and let us know the results, so we can advise you further.

OK guys, this is what I have done altogether;

BIOS power management:

ACPI suspend type changed from S3 to S1
Remote wake up turned from ON to OFF

(I didn't set Sleep to 'never')

Power Options control panel

Changing the advanced power options 'allow hybrid sleep' was not even there as an option after having changed the ACPI suspend type setting in BIOS, so couldn't do that....

Power Options > USB > USB selective suspend was already enabled.

Power Options > USB > ,When sharing media' I set it to 'allow computer to sleep'

That was yesterday afternoon and so far it wakes from sleep just fine!!!!!!!

Thank you both so very much for your time and patience, hopefully I won't be back on this particular thread again so have a wonderful summer :D

(PS I shall wait a couple of days to make sure before marking the thread as solved if that is ok?)

Resurrecting old thread in the hope someone can help with identical problem.

Until recently my PC (Win 7 professional, 64 bit, operating system on SSD, personal files on hard drive, 2x Nvidia Geforce 210 graphics cards, Asus P6X58DE motherboard, 24GB RAM) was behaving itself fine. At the end of each day I'd put it into sleep and I could wake the machine up fine the next morning using a USB mouse or keyboard. I like to leave my PC asleep overnight with lots of files open that I'll have been working with during the day.

Recently when I put the PC to sleep, it goes to sleep OK but refuses to do anything if I click the mouse or keyboard. If I press the PC power on button the button lights up and one of the fans comes on quietly. The monitor however remains in standby. I have no idea if the PC is actually doing anything or not, and the only way to get back to Windows is to do a forced reboot. This makes something happen as all the fans come on, but there is no POST "beep" and screen stays blank. I have to do a second forced reboot to get the POST beep and bootup into Windows.

I've tried pretty much every power configuration I can think of under Control Panel/Power management but can't make the wretched thing wake up properly. My chipset driver is the latest, my Nvidia graphics driver is the latest (though I even uninstalled it and installed an earlier version without solving the problem), as far as I know my other drivers are all up to date. Hibernation is disabled due to having an SSD and not wanting to write the Hiberfil.sys file to the disk whenever I startup, but if I activate hibernation I have the same problem only I get "Resuming Windows" rather than "Starting Windows". I've tinkered with disabling Windows Aero, no joy.

In desperation I made a Macrium backup then reinstalled Windows 7 from my original DVD from about 3 years ago, and set it not to do any Windows updates. I tried putting the naive, three year old, no updates-since-DVD PC to sleep, but sleep options were greyed out as there was no video driver. So I installed the latest Nvidia graphics card driver which enabled sleep as an option. And I tried putting the PC to sleep. Guess what - it wouldn't wake up properly, a fan came on as before but monitor remained in standby until I did two forced reboots. Oh, and that was with connecting the monitor via VGA and HDMI in case the type of monitor cable made a difference, too.

I've tried setting BIOS to S1 rather than S3 and this causes the monitor to go into standby and the PC fans to remain spinning. The PC comes straight out of sleep without problem, and the monitor springs back to life. So it's clearly an issue with S3. For power consumption reasons I don't fancy leaving the PC in S1 whenever I'm not around, but it's the only way I can get it to sleep and S1 isn't really sleep. Please can anyone suggest any other things to explore so I can get my PC to wake from S3 sleep again?
