Here's my setup:
HP G42-476TX running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit with an AMD ATI Mobility Radeon 6370M

Heres what happened:
Was playing an MMORPG called RF Online, fairly low sys reqts as I have been playing this game ever since on an pentium 4 rig. While playing my screen froze and the the whole laptop froze after the freeze a BSOD appeared, and rebooted fine. Then the display driver error showed up and then it froze again. Right now when ever I try to turn the computer on all I get is a blankscreen as if the LCD has been disconnected from the main board but that is not the case. When I tried connecting it through an external momitor the display would appear but is on the Windows recovery menu. I can access safe mode without a problem. Ok now, I am left with a laptop that has a blank screen and solely depends on an external monitor for video output. Also sometimes if I leave the laptop turned off and come back to after a couple of minutes or hours, it would boot up normally with the LCD on.

The problem:
After hours and hours of browsing about the problem I have came across a handful of "fixes" and "solutions" to the problem and so far none have worked so far, thus here I am. Still trying to resolve it. Ok so my main problem is the blackscreen after it crashes, I always need to attach it to an external monitor so I can see display BUT the thing is, SOMETIMES it shows up on the laptop screens and sometimes it does not. And ofcourse secondly the driver problem that forces my laptop tp crash and restart.

What I have done so far:
Ok so far there has been a couple of things I have done. First was I upgraded the drivers, second, I uninstalled the drivers and installed them again, third I followed some steps from microsoft support to fix the problem by editing the registry which did not work aswell.

So far there is still a number of things I havent tried.

My question:
Will a clean install of Windows fox this for sure? If not are there any other alternativies? Also I have seen a couple of suggestions on diff forums that it has something to do with the voltage, is this a possibility and how can I remedy this?

This problem has been bugging me for two days and I still cannot get a fix. Any help from you guys would be VERY HIGHLY APPRECIATED. Soo thank you in advance guys. And please, help :(

Sorry, but this sounds a lot like hardware issues -- with the display, primarily, or maybe the video chipset.

To check that out, you need to remove the hard drive from the picture, so boot from a Windows disk and see if the video works OK then. If you don't have a Windows disk, then use the Backup feature in Win7 to create and burn a Win7 repair CD (if you can get that far), and boot from that. If you can't do that with your PC, see if you can get a friend with Win7 to do that for you. The version of Win7 doesn't matter for this test.

If your display is OK booting from the disk, then at least the display and video chipset are working OK.

If you get no display when booting from a Windows disk, that implies the display has failed. That could either be the screen itself or the video chipset. When you connect an external monitor, that bypasses both the laptop screen and video chipset.

When the laptop first boots into the BIOS, it's not using Windows drivers. If you have your laptop BIOS parms set to show progress, and nothing appears on the screen, that is clearly hardware issue.

In either case, reinstalling is not likely to work -- if the problem was software (as in drivers), when you booted into a Windows disk, or even just rebooted, you would see stuff on the screen.

It works fine now, I installed ubuntu 12.04 LTS. I had a problem with my win7 install cd and only had the ubuntu available. But yes, I do think this is also a hardware issue.. But its working on ubuntu withoit the ati drivers so its fine.

The thing that I do not understand is, why does it work on an external monitor if the hardware has the problem?.. I mean, if it shows display on an external monitor is there something I can do to make it work on a laptop screen?

Also, would it be possible that the fan is just dirty and causes these problems? My laptop does get hot real fast lately..
