This is a good idea to test your AV system, however this file is too outdated to be of any use as even Windows Defender catches it. Avira AntiVir Premium 2008 runs great on my x64 Windows 7 and has already caught several viruses that slipped right past Defender.

Like I said, perhaps "test" is a misnomer. It really should be called the "eicar anti-virus validation file". All its supposed to do it validate that your anti-virus engine has been installed correctly and is functioning. All anti-virus software should find it if it's working at all. That's the idea. Again, it's not an all in one software quality test suite -- that really does not exist -- it's just a standard way to make sure that your anti-virus solution is alive.

Hey Guys

One thing to remember, even tho a program like this may "install" and "appear" to work properly...it may not be. If the AV is not designed for this Win7 build, a Vista compatible scanner may install properly, due to 7's structure being similar to Vista's, but some aspects of 7's kernel or operational differences, may cause the engine to not do all the necessary tasks properly.
I can't say for sure that this is FACT without thorough testing (which I don't have the energy to do yet), but my previous experiences in AV & Security product testing (which is fairly extensive), proves that to be the case in many previous instances such as this.

That's a TOTALLY precautionary note y'all, they may be functioning just fine after all, but usually that's not the case. Some tweaks are usually needed for a product like this to be able to work across a new platform build like 7 is.

I just d'loaded my 7 copy and WDK, SDK...so on, and have yet to install it. Had a hell of a time with FTM, it installed but would not launch when the .dlm file was opened. Finally after a couple hours of fartin around I got it working, so I'll install it on a testbed tomorrow.

Just another heads-up, there is an important Update for 7 that fixes a metadata issue in WMP and WMC that can cause permanent loss of large starting sections of MP3 files when editing tag data.

Oh, one more thing. For those who are trying Nod32 or ESS...are you using V3 or the new Beta V4 (for beta testers)? I'd be interested to know which if you read this.

Thanx guys

Dave

I'm using NOD32 4.0 Beta. I sent them an email today asking if their public product would be compatible with W7 or not but have not heard from them yet. I had tried all the MS suggested products and AVAST and did not like anything I saw in them. NOD32 4.0 Beta seems to be quite good and is using minimal resources. I have 4gig of RAM on a 32 bit machine (Dell 1720) and am only using a total of 21-24% RAM at any one time.
I like the configurations I can choose and it seems to have better overall protection all the way around then the others.
While the other products probably had somewhat sufficient coverage, they seemed lets say, inadaquate, to me but I am far from being an expert in this subject.

This is killing me! Kaspersky is causing constant BSODs and I cannot get it uninstalled. I've gone into safe mode and even that crashes the uninstaller.

This is my working machine but my HTPC is similar just toned down.
I was using Norton Internet Security Suite 2009 without any issues...I switched to the 360 Beta 3.0 just in case!

Think I may do the same but not had any problems to be honest and seems to trap anything a bit iffy.

What the hell is Symantec's game I mean I had Norton internet security 2009 installed that was working just fine with a years subs on it. Now they get you to install 360 Beta, go through all the registration and they send you an email with a code and everything and all you get is 14 days usage. What a joke and now have all the trouble of uninstalling and re-installing another package. Typical Symantec never give much away.

Crap service if you ask me just a form of cheap advertising and gets Microsoft to do the advertising for them.

I'm running Avira AntiVir Premium 8.2. Works great in Win7 64 bit. It also had the highest detection rate at AV-Comparatives.

Avira Premium Security Suite 9 Beta also works well on 32 bit Win7. Limited support for 64 bit now.....full 64 bit in later builds.
