Hello guys, Did anyone notice that some of the files after a windows update in windows 7 is installed on the last drive of your computer? For example if you have drives: C, D, and E. Some of the files after the windows update will get installed in E and if you have a External Hard Disk then it will install them on the External Hard disk drive. Can you change that and make them to install those files on C drive or any other drive except for the external Hard Disk?

Hi dxbladexd, welcome to 7F! :)

I have but, one HDD, so I can't relate to your situation, but it sounds to me like you have Windows 7 on your C: drive or partition.

Two items come to mind,

  • That C: drive or partition isn't active or the primary drive when your installing those updates.
  • You may have to perform a Windows Update Reset.
Can you post a screenshot of your: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/274797-disk-management-post-screen-capture-image.html
And you may need this for later: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/91738-windows-update-reset.html

It's perfectly normal behaviour for Windows Update to do this :) As far as I know, there isn't a way to change this so I'm afraid it's just something you're going to have to put up with.

WU tends to look for the drive with the largest amount of free space to use as a temporary storage area - nothing new in that (I think it started in XP?)
Dunno if that behaviour can be changed :(

Can we see a screenshot of the files in question?

Pleease also use the method shown in the blue link tutorial to capture and post the screenshots, which is why we bothered to write the tutorial and post it for you.

Tom, considering Noel's reply and hypothetically speaking because dxbladexd (dxb) C: drive looks to be the smallest, would it help if dxb moved some Folder/Files to another drive to increase the available space on the C: drive or in dxb's case, change the size of the partitions so that C: is the largest drive?

Temporary Noel? If dxb deleted those files on the other drives would the Updates remain installed in the core of the operating system?

Greg, does an Update create a difference in how it is installed?

I'm not 100% sure that's the case :) My primary HDD is 2TB, of which 1TB is free, but my other HDD is 500GB with about 100GB free and that frequently has Windows Update files dumped on it, when it's has the smallest free disk space, both physically and proportionately.

Well what if I cut the files that got saved on my external or portable hard disk and save it to the last drive for example Drive E? Will that work?

The files which are in blue are the ones in question.

Those two folders look fine to delete. They are just temp folders. Not the updates themselves.

But you can play it safe...
...create a folder named delete-me
...move those folders in there
...use your computer for a week or two
If everything works as desired, then delete the folder named delete-me.

You might have trouble moving the top one. You might have to take ownership of it.

Or you could just leave the folders alone.

So long as all updates are properly installed, you can just delete the folder. The tmp file however is likely to be regenerated every time a WU install takes place, so it's your choice as to whether you delete it or not.

These three updates keeps on installing over and over again. After I removed those files, so is it cause of that or any other problem?

This is a problem with the updates and not with your computer, so I'm afraid there's nothing we can do about it. On all of the update's KB pages, it lists this condition as a known problem:

MS13-073: Description of the security update for Microsoft Office Excel 2007: September 10, 2013
MS13-073: Description of the security update for Microsoft Excel 2007 (xlconv-x-none.msp): September 10, 2013
MS13-072: Description of the security update for 2007 Office system (MSO): September 10, 2013

Known issues with this security update

  • You may be repeatedly offered this update even though it is already installed. Microsoft is researching this problem and will post more information in this article when the information becomes available.

Just hang on until Microsoft issues a fix for this!

Tom

Does it offer those Updates if you leave the staging file instead of delete it? If not then I would leave it.

I have only seen those staging files in C and after deleting never had issues of any sort. Sometimes there are quite a few of them, though I never investigated to see if they all pertained to WUD.

Well I also do not think the removal of those files are causing it but just to make sure I asked you guys and as tom said it seems its a known issue and microsoft is trying to fix this.
