Hi guys,

My laptop performance (Lenovo Thinkpad,T510i) is really low and I tried all kind of things (though I don't understand much). I even installed the CCleaner which I run regular...
The Windows troubleshooter is asking me to prevent programs from running at startup but how do I know if I need them or not?
Here is the list:

  • Synaptics Pointing Device Driver
  • On screen display
  • TpShocks
  • SAIICpl Application
  • Interl(R) Common Interface
  • Interl(R) Common Interface
  • ThinkVantage Communications Utility
  • AcWin7Hlpr
  • RCIMGDIR
  • PWMTRV
  • (default)
  • HPUsage Tracking
  • Apple Push
  • AVG Internet Security
  • vProt
  • HPStatusAlerts
  • hpwuSchd Application
  • Java(TM) Platfrom SE Auto Updater
  • Digital Line Detection
Would be really great if you can help me out :)
Thanks a lot! Adjoa

See if the trouble shooter finds anything

WinKey + R opens Run dialog
copy the following command and paste the in the "Open:" box

%systemroot%\system32\msdt.exe -id PerformanceDiagnostic

hit Ok and when the trouble shooter dailog is presented, hit next

most likely it won't find anything, but you can click on view detailed information in the lower left of the dialog to see what areas were tested.

Hi adjoa,

Welcome to Seven forums.

Well, which software to keep on startup and which not is completly dependent on the usage. I believe you should only keep your security software and any other software that you use primarily on the system should be left on startup.

Rest of them it is better to leave them unchecked to provide better system performance. Check this for clean booting the system and then you can enable security and other most used softwares on the system:

Clean Boot

Keep us posted with the results so we can advise you further.

Thanks a lot for your quick reply!

%systemroot%\system32\msdt.exe -id PerformanceDiagnostic

most likely it won't find anything...

@Slartybart: That's exactly what I did and what gave me the long list... The problem with all these names (above): I have no clue how to allocate them, e.g. RCIMGDIR or PWMTRV.

@SandeepP: How do I know which program I use primarily - I mean, which is which? Most names don't tell me anything

Yep, I missed you saying that you used the troubleshooter :o

Keep only your Pointing device driver and AV software. See if that alone helps improve performance.
  • Synaptics Pointing Device Driver
  • AVG Internet Security
Don't know what a thing is - Google it
Search a specific site by typing
site:sevenforums.com startup AND msconfig
By disabling the following items, you might lose some functionality for specific applications ons, but if you really need them, you can always go back into msconfig and enable them.
  • On screen display
  • TpShocks
  • SAIICpl Application
  • Interl(R) Common Interface & Interl(R) Common Interface
  • ThinkVantage Communications Utility - ???? assitant for camera and mic..might need to be re-enabled if you experience issues specific to online chat/camera operations
  • AcWin7Hlpr
  • RCIMGDIR ?? Rioch or Conextant..might need to be re-enabled if you experience issues specific to SDcard or sound
  • PWMTRV - vendor pwr manager
  • (default) - no clue!
  • HPUsage Tracking
  • Apple Push
  • vProt
  • HPStatusAlerts - printer alerts, don't need them
  • hpwuSchd Application - updates, don't need them
  • Java(TM) Platfrom SE Auto Updater - updates don't need them (but should check manually or even better remove java if not needed)
  • Digital Line Detection

Hi adjoa,

You should keep the AVG Internet Security on and then disable all of them and check the performance. On usage if you see any application not working correctly then you can always go back and enable them from the startup.

You can google the process name and it would give you the name of the application it runs.On my system I only run torrent and firewall running on startup as I need them to start up automatically once I switch on the system and rest of them I can open when I want only.

So it is best to have least number of software on startup which would increase the speed of the system and less resources are used.

Keep us posted with the results.

Hi Slartybart,

Please accept my apologies if you felt the same. I believe somehow I missed your post. Thread is all yours and if I have anything to add would surely pitch in. Hope that would be fine.
