Solved Problem with SURT hanging when downloading (KB947821)

Looking down this list of current update failures,

one might be excused for thinking Microsoft has a serious problem which started a couple of days back.

I have spent the last two days trying to re- install failed up dates.

About twelve in all and only relative to two error codes (800F08260) for most of them, then an odd

two with (80070490). First I tried finding a restore point prior to everything going wrong. Windows was

less than appreciative of that and the restore failed. I tried updating single updates manually but no go,

they still failed. Two days back I put in new antivirus and firewall and I wondered if that was the problem,

so I disabled and went back to Defender and Windows firewall. Nope, that made no difference.

So I logged on here, took note of "Windows update posting instructions"

and worked my way down to the SURT program. I attempted to install the version for Win 7 64 bit

and initially it looked good and was installing (9KB947821) (which I was surprised to see was a Hot Fix? )

when it hung. I left it for a while but it just was stuck there, so I killed it with task manager and

downloaded a new version then installed it. It also reached the same point then hung.

If I go look at the update history it shows a failure for (KB947821) but then a success!

I suppose I should think myself lucky but, what I would like to know is, If I instigate Windows Updates

now. will they all work? In other words, was that hot fix the thing needed to get my system out of this

deepening pit it was/is in? Does Microsoft have a problem, or do I have a problem?

For everyone's info, the re-run of ten windows updates, failed when 35% into the re-boot.

This has started me thinking about alternative OS solutions.

I don't understand your request.

What is a CBS folder? The SURT instructions led me to where I could select the version suitable for my

Win 7 64bit system and I downloaded and ran that 9KB9437821 hot fix, succeeding on the second try.

It made some difference and I was able to load some of the updates. I am still stuck with four updates repeatedly offered but repeatedly failing. I followed the help links from the error descriptions and was able to download
MicrosoftFixit.wu. RNP, only to find although it runs, it does nothing and checking their website, I find the software has been discontinued by Microsoft. Another dead end.

Perhaps the CBS reference is further down the instructions? I did not get that far if it was. No reason.

OK, I have found and posted a compressed form of CBS on my desk top.

Are you sure I should post it on here? it is awful Big! It's under Alzip in five CABlogs two Checksurlogs and one CBS log.

Will just the CBS log do? I have yet to figure out attachments etc.,

OK, I am working on it but, in the meantime I have realised the two errors I got, one was caused by the other, from references MS are making. The important one being 80070490.

I have found the upgrade option discussed but unfortunately my system is too new to do that. I have also found a guy in the USA who says I have over 2500 errors in my files and he will fix it for $29.95 . Too much for an old pensioner.

I am now doing what I did with the 800F0826 error, with the 80070490 error. If that fails I will do the download.

Yes, this is another day here in Oz, the scam was very evident from the garbage that accompanied it. No way would I go down that path. My further attempts with the KB947821 hot fix made no difference.
I am about to try your paperclip attachment instructions. The file is in Alzip, I hope this is OK.
It uploaded I know not where.

Just to add, my system is Win 7 64bit on a 500gb HDD. I run dual boot with Win 7 32bit on a 1TB HDD,
I don't have the second drive connected at the moment but, it gives me the option of a full disc image copy if needed.

I just did all that and then lost it when I went back to check I had done everything, more importantly, in the right order.

It doesn't appear to have posted so here it is again.

I have run the system scan and it said it found corrupt files and fixed them. Here is another CBS after the scan.View attachment 289290
The errors I mentioned earlier, they are 800F0826 and 80070490.

You still only uploaded the CBS.log file - we also need the CheckSUR logs.

However, the SFC results are at least present in this copy of the CBS log... and show the following in the summary.

Amazing! that was around three years back!
I can't even remember how I did the hack but, it was that I had a helluva lot of emails I didn't want to lose,
and the cost of a convertor to move 'em over was a bit much. I still have winmail installed also thunderbird but,
I use a strangulated form of windows live mail.

Ok I will send the checksur log with this, I hope!

Its is a bit odd that I can't prove if I have Oh OK, if I click on the paperclip, there it is!

The results are normal for a Win7 with IE10 installed.
One problem I only just noticed - Your clock is a year off.
Please reset it properly, and see what happens then.

These update failures only happened in the last few days and not a lot has changed except last month,

I swapped from Avira Pro to Zone Alarm Pro + firewall. Initially Zone Alarm built up triplicate temp files.

ZA assured me that was normal but it didn't look so to me so, I uninstalled and re-installed.

The temp files have gone. I also have the small hack 'Take Ownership', which I may have used recently.

It sometimes messes up the files and causes loops.

I also run torrents which can let some messy stuff in at times.

I use Easy Cleaner regularly and I have WinPatrol installed.

EasyCleaner had a very good rep back in the days of Win9x - but I've not heard anything about it recently. This could be a good thing, or it could simply be that it's below the radar. I assume you're referring to the ToniArts variant? Looking at the CNET download, it doesn't seem to have been updated since the release of Windows 7, which makes me concerned that about whether it can cope with the modern registry.

I would recommend uninstalling ZA, and running the removal tools for both that and for Avira.

TakeOwnership is a useful tool - but should be used with caution, as changing ownership on system files and folders can have unforeseen consequences.

That's a bit disturbing from my point of view, I upgraded to Avira Pro last year but became annoyed with them when they asked for the annual subscription 40 days before it was due.

I had noticed Zone Alarm had added a firewall so opted for the paid version Zone Alarm Pro + Firewall just last month.

That seems to be when my troubles started. I have always been reluctant to rely completely on MS and have never trusted their antivirus or firewall and the UAC drives me crazy!
Perhaps I have misjudged them. I will do as you suggest and see if things improve.

Winpatrol and Easy Cleaner are there out of old habits. I have noticed Easy Cleaner is very slow these days, I am also amazed at how much crud these modern programs leave behind.

I also have Ashampoo Win Optimiser but rarely use it.

My system is a notebook chip based all in one and not the fastest, it's a Medion Akoya P4020D, three
years old now and showing its age a bit, although the digital tuner and touchscreen are handy.
I modified it slightly to get an external sata port but otherwise it is standard.
