Additional log on information may be required in notification tray

Patch Tuesday on Oct 8, 2013 had 24 important updates. But BEFORE those updates I developed a new problem:

Network/Internet Access Icon: In the lower-right of the desktop, in the notification area, I receive a frequent pop-up notification that states, " Additional Log on Information may be required. Click to open your browser"

If you click it, it does open your browser but no more prompts---it just opens the browser normally. Pop-up definitely appears on start-up or re-start. After you close the pop-up a few times the pop-up quits but will reappear on start-up or reboot.

In googling the problem, the same problem appeared not in 2013 but 2012. Some answers seemed to identify a Windows Update KB number that was the culprit so uninstall the KB or wait for another KB update to fix it. Other answers talked about "switching DNS setting on router to "auto retrieve from provider". Another answer talked about disabling "Enabled NX Domain Redirection" option. Another answer talked about messing with the "registry key and set to zero for DNS", These are some areas I am not confident with, especially messing with the registry.

I also had this notification a few days ago. Since it was no problem I did not bother much and did not get into research mode to find out why this was happening. Now however it has disappeared and the notification no longer appears.

Will be interesting to see what others have to say on this problem.

EDIT: The only Password that is remembered in my system is that of SevenForums.

I had the same notification yesterday one time on start up but none since.

On edit: I spoke to soon, after today's updates it's back.

I too am recently getting this systray pop-up. For me, it only appears soon after a start, re-start or start out of hiberbate. I do not recall if it coincide with the recent Updates, but it might.

Any movement of my mouse or doing anything and the notification disappears.

I'm getting the notification less & less.

OpenDNS is not something that is set up automatically in most cases and requires you to set the preferred DNS server under the Local Area Connection Properties. If you did not set this up then chances are you are not using OpenDNS. However if you would like to check I suggest that you review the Configuration and setup FAQ Here:https://support.opendns.com/entries/21808024-Configuration-Setup-FAQ The third paragraph titled "How do I test whether or not I am using OpenDNS on my network?" provides a link to test your system and also explains how the determination is made.

The reason I asked is because I read an old OpenDNS forum entry that referred to OpenDNS as the problem in 2012 OpenDNS Community > Forums > "Additional log on information may be required" pop up warning issue.

As bobnorma said in his post there is a lot of out dated information on the Internet regarding this issue. It is note worthy to state that there does not seem to be a great number of people having this issue at the moment based on the lack of more recent information.

I have stopped using OpenDNS to see if the pop ups continue. After several reboots I have not seen it pop up again but it seems to pop at different intervals which I have not been able to nail down to any specific cause yet. Prior to changing the preferred DNS server it would pop up several times even when my browser was already open. I am attempting to resolve the issue but I must admit I am shooting in the dark.

Yes I am and I've applied the fixes described here and here. Only the reg hack (changing the EnableActiveProbing value to 0) seems to permanently stop the popups

In my case OpenDNS is the cause of the pop ups as well. I have spent the last couple of hours playing with this and found that the reason the pop up occurs at different intervals is because I have a dynamic IP address and have to use the OpenDNS updater to update to my currently assigned IP address.

Because I use an air card through my router I may disconnect and connect numerous times in the course of a day.

I have posted a question as to whether there is any other way to clear this up without making the registry edit over at the OpenDNS forums. I note that this problem seems to present itself every year since 2009.

In as much as I have no idea what the edit will do I am at present unwilling to make it and will disable OpenDNS until another way of rectifying the issue comes along.

thank you scr for the link - it shows I am using OpenDNS. However, from what I read at that site, disabling it makes my computer vulnerable. I can live with this anomaly rather than put my system at risk. Or am I not understanding something?

Thanks for your reply, I do have static IP's for my home network but it isn't possible for the Internet using my router with Verizon wireless modem as far as I know.

I received a response to my post over at the OpenDNS forum:

Hi all,

This is due to the OS calling out to the domain ipv6.microsoft.com. OpenDNS is trying to resolve it, but the domain does not respond to our resolvers, which causes Windows to alert the user that they may need to update their login credentials, because it's assuming you haven't connected to the Internet.

The issue should be fixed now, please flush your browser and DNS cache by following the instructions below:

OpenDNS > Support > Knowledge Base > Clearing the DNS Cache on Browsers
OpenDNS > Support > Knowledge Base > Clearing the DNS Cache on Computers and Servers

just another idea -- is the Internet browser trying to logon to an account that needs a password / username to connect -- for instance you might be trying to connect for example to Vodafone_wifi when you log on -- sometimes when you use public Wi-Fi services your system will try and connect automatically when in range of these unless you uncheck the box connect automatically.

I have the same issue! I tried flushing my browser and DNS cache by following the instructions given in scr's post but the problem still persists.
