How to Alphabetize the start menu?

Has anyone figured out how to alphabetize the start menu? When I go to properties > customize > Sort all programs by name Nothing happens.

those programs which appear when you first click the start button are your most used applications.

this list is dynamic, and so it will not stay sorted over time.

you can choose to 'pin' shortcuts to the start-menu, when they go into a special section at the top.

A neat feature I think would be to re-organize the programs menu by install date.

If start menu is set to show recent programs, then most used program will be on top of the list and so on...
If start menu is set to show shortcuts (pinned to start menu), shortcuts can be arranged by dragging...

I solved the problem. There is a program called "Vista Start Menu". Download and install it at www.[B]vistastartmenu[/B].com/index.html.

It is nearly the same as Vista's classic menu. You can drag and drop your programs in alphabetical order or as You wish.

If you're talking about the programs listed on the left hand side of the start menu, three is a way - but it is a tedious way.

• First, you have to disable displaying most recently used programs. See http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/2275-recent-programs-turn-off.html
• Second, you have to pin the programs that you want to see in the start menu manually, one by one. See http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/744-start-menu-pin-unpin-program.html (you might also be interested in http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/5736-start-menu-enable-folder-library-pin-start-menu.html and / or http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/8964-start-menu-pin-unpin-folder.html and / or http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/899-start-menu-reset-pin-area.html
• Third, you'll have to drag and drop them to alphabetize them manually using Drag and Drop.

Mind you, if you leave the show most recent programs *on* it will be a separate list underneath your pinned programs.

Vista Start menu works for what you want - but for someone who does not want to use it, the above method I outlined works perfectly well.
