Windows Explorer crashing on right-click under x64 RTM

Does this happen in safe mode?

Safe mode is safe from harm; works just fine.

Out of curiosity, I downloaded HijackThis earlier today.
I noticed that there were Extra ContextMenu handlers that it picked up that I did NOT see with ShellExView.

I got rid of them (there were three or four, mostly Adobe Acrobat 9).
Thus far.. I haven't seen the ntdll.dll crash.

But I want to be more patient to make sure it truly is gone.
Again, like in the past, it can seem like it's gone for some time after trying a "solution." It may appear again, so I want to give it some time.

Alright, this has been happening to me as well, definitely more often than usual. Originally I thought it was just a problem with RC x64, so I got RTM x64, clean install and everything and then I went to C:\Users\ \Appdata to check the FireFox Bookmark.html file to see why my Favicons werent showing in the Bookmark Toolbar, and when I would close the window it would crash, also when I right click, to say Empty Recycle bin, but it doesnt happen every time, it also happens alot when I move a file say a movie from my desktop to my videos folder, and mind you this is on RC and RTM no upgrades, both clean installs.

The only things I have installed is, FireFox, WinRar, Kaspersky 2010, Java, Flashplayer, Divx Web Player, K-Lite Codec Pack Full, Mp3Tag and uTorrent.

My honest thoughts, this crap started happening shortly after I went from Kaspersky 2009 to 2010, but I must say the context menu problem wasnt happening before but when I would move medium to large sized files from my desktop to any folders it would sometimes do it, so I'm at a loss.

++ Also, on my Moms pc, shes still running RC from the initial release and she says she has the same problems only difference is hers is 32bit

For everyone experiencing this you have my utmost sympathy.

The stuff I have in common with you Twss is Firefox, WinRAR (since deleted and replaced with 7-Zip), Java, Flash, and uTorrent.

I have to say since going berserk and removing anything I thought might be causing the issue, I haven't been hit for three days now.

I completely removed Microsoft Security Essentials, WinRar, and Spybot - Search & Destroy.

I also removed the CCleaner context menu items and everything else that was listed in ShellExView, i.e. the ATI entries.

I also ran the registry cleaner from within CCleaner.

So, like I said above, three days and no crashes.

Only problem is I don't actually know what fixed it. I am going to hold off reinstalling and give it a few more days to make sure, then the idea was to start reintroducing software one at a time. Although I think I can live without WinRAR now, as for MSE and Spybot - Search & Destroy, I am going to wait until there are new builds out.

I wish Adobe would get there act together and release more frequent versions of Flash and Shockwave, especially with x64 support. Seems everyone is pushing x64 but nobody is quite ready yet, minus the few exceptions.

I have the same issue. Win 7 x64 Ultimate RTM. All third party context menus disabled via ShellexView.

Can I ask what versions of Win 7 people are using? Because I found one post via Google suggesting that installing Win 7 Professional solved the issue and it might be related to the Ultimate version.

Using Ultimate here as well, although I don't think its Utorrent, using that right now and it never crashes. I installed Adobe Master Suite last night and it crashed like 40 times but it installed fine (crashes aside), I don't get it, this problem is more annoying than it is anything else  Really, I should just do a fresh install of RTM and put nothing on it to see if it does it still but I've installed RTM like 4 times already this week :o

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate RTM also. I have access to Professional through Technet but I am utterly sick of reinstalling Windows.

Now where's that Hackintosh site...? :p

I really am at a total loss now, this damn issue has crushed me.
Initially I thought it was my Creative X-Fi Xtreme Audio drivers, as they were causing a similar problem when I used the Sound Control Panel.
I managed to resolve it by removing that particular part of the Creative drivers.

Next up was Microsoft Security Essentials, I'm still not convinced it wasn't something to do with that as this was my only change in software when I installed the RTM build.

I have removed EVERYTHING using ShellExView, and again, it still persists.

Last night I removed my Creative card completely and put it away, that way I can make sure it is definitely NOT anything Creative.

I have ran sfc/scannow which is totally fine, and ran the registry cleaner that is part of CCleaner. Normally I wouldn't use this but I have nothing to lose at this point.

I have checked my startup entries and services and removed any non-essential entries. I have also had a look through the Registry Editor for anything related to 'msvcrt.dll' and 'ntdll.dll', which are ALWAYS the culprits, that might jump out at me.

NOTHING.

I might remove uTorrent and Java as a test but I have never had any problems with either program before.

Lastly, I have also done several thorough scans with Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, Spybot - Search & Destroy (since removed, MSE (since removed), and avast! Home Edition.

All clean. :)

Somebody must be able to help!?

The error has definitely come up less frequently with the help of hijackthis and shellexview..

but it still persists.
now, photoshop cs4 (32 and 64 bit) has fallen victim to ntdll.dll.
there's a popular fix regarding printer drivers.. no go. still crashes. yay.

This is rather amusing, but I tried running the 32-bit photoshop under compatibility mode (XP SP2) as a last resort and it worked fine, no crash. I laughed, but this is seriously weird stuff. I'm kinda afraid to see if explorer.exe could be run under compatibility mode; dont want to break it. Even then, this is just a work-around.. not a fix.

Latest suggestion over at the My Digital Life Forums is that its Firefox and x64 systems.

I do have FF3 installed. So who knows. This is so frustrating because I can't replicate the crash. Win 7 will run fine for hours and then explorer crashes for seemingly no reason. Its like playing russian roulette with the right mouse button.

Anyone else running Windows 7 Ultimate with FF3?

I never really had any problems with KIS9, it wasnt until I got KIS10 that I suspected it could be culprit

It's like playing russian roulette with the right mouse button.

LOL! So true.

Well after reading the post over at My Digital Life I have gone ahead and removed Firefox. I really didn't want to have to do that but at this stage I will try anything. I am utterly desperate for a stable environment.

I see that the issue has been reported to Mozilla, so hopefully if it does turn out to be Firefox, then we should get a fix soon enough.

It is most certainly not KIS, at least for me anyway, as I have never installed nor used KIS before.

I miss Firefox already, I forgot just how bad Internet Explorer actually is.
I would have used Chrome but I cannot live without LastPass.

Well if its FF at least we have a culprit as much as I don't want to use IE. I'll uninstall FF and re-enable the context menu items and see if its fixed as well.

I doubt its KIS2010 as well. I do have KIS installed however, I had the explorer.exe crash prior to installing it.

Well I've bitten the bullet and installed Windows 7 Professional x64. I don't really need the Ultimate extras and if it is an Ultimate issue then the problems solved for me.

I'm reinstalling my drivers and applications one by one until I get (or preferably don't get) a crash.

At this point I'm not installing Firefox. I've installed Opera instead. I'm leaving KIS2010 until last. Once I'm happy that everything is stable, I'll install Firefox and see what happens.
