I use Microsoft Office Picture Manager for the JPEG, PNG, TIFF and BMP format, it works awesome, and I love the built in Edit feature, you can crop and resize instantly. For the GIF's I Use chrome, it's okay.

Even when I set the windows photo viewer to default it will not work properly.

When I double click a gif to open it it still asks what program to open it with but it should use the photo viewer since i set it as default.

Start Menu>Default Programs>Set your Default Programs>Windows Photo Viewer>Choose Defaults for this Program. A small list will appear. Check the file formats you'd like to set as default for this program.

That is exactly what I did however it still asks me what to open it with when I click the file. This is why I have a problem.

I did and I can't find the windows photo viewer so I am using explorer. It's not what i want but it works for now.

The easiest way to find a program is to find it in the start menu and then right click and select open file location.

On my system, it is in C:\Windows\system32\WFS.exe

And yes, what he said, using the browse you can choose it yourself.

I am looking for the Windows Photo Viewer which used to be Windows Picture Fax Viewer back on XP.

I can right click any image file and choose that program as default to open that type of image with and it will without an issue EXCEPT gifs. When I right click on a gif image it does not have that option in the list. If I knew exactly where the exe for the photo viewer was I could fix this issue but I have no idea where they buried it.

In the image below I right clicked a png and chose open with and to choose a default program. If I had done the same for a gif the option in red would not be there.

Well then, our task is to find where the .exe of this program is hiding. What sucks is that when you start up the program it does not appear under Task Manager>Processes. I can't seem to find any other way, but I will keep searching for the location of the file.

I could use something like that but I really want to be able to just use what is already there if I can make it function how it should. Otherwise opening it with IE works just as well but is not the answer I want either.

On a side note the biggest issue is really that with a folder full of mixed image formats any gif images in the folder are skipped when I open an image with photo viewer and then skip through the images in the folder with it. Since it does not want to recognize gif images properly right now.

If it aint showing as .exe all you need to do is... Right click your picture (This is only for location of windows photo viewer, not for a default gif viewer) right click >Properties> clcik change>browse.program files>windows photo viewer> File extension dropdown list>click all files>click photo viewer.dll and it will show photo viewer. However this is not capable of viewing gif files.

This works on 32 and 64 bit OS. Windows 7 Gif viewer I have used this on a win7 64bit desktop and a windows vista 32bit laptop, windows 7 64bit laptop. Please read the instruction on the page when installing. and after you install it and windows complains about it might not have installed right, just hit cancel.
