I just wanted to know what happens when I back up a file from my mom's Windows XP Professional Desktop Computer to my Windows 7 Home Laptop? Will all the files automatically update with my system or do I have to manually update them myself? Please help. I'm still learning about how the two different Windows OS work. Thank you.

What type of files are we talking about. And why don't you back them to an external disk on the XP system.

Hi Whs,
I'm sorry I was talking about backing up my mom's email messages and I have backed up my mom's email messages. I just wanted to know if she adds a (new) email message to her folder will it auto update on my saved folder that I have in Avira Backup on my Windows 7 Laptop?

I cannot answer that question because I do not know the setup of your backup program which I have no clue about either.

I use free AOL for my mail since many years and all my mail is at their host. I can still look at my mail from day 1 - they never lost a thing. I think that's the way to go rather than messing yourself with the mail.

Unless you have some kind of syncing software for that, no.

Okay Thanks for your answer Lady Fitzgerald. I don't want to install any syncing software on my Mom's Windows XP machine, because it only has 384 MB of RAM and it is 23 years old, and still working like a turtle, but well.

You are aware that XP will reach it's End Of Life 04/08/2014 and M$ will no longer issue updates, including security updates? After, that XP will become increasingly vulnerable to malware. Your Mom needs to get a new machine by then. Mayhap a Christmas present?

Yes I know that she needs a new desktop computer and I have finally convinced her to get one. Yay!
