Solved PC won't sleep, new reinstall Win 7 x64

Hi guys,

I had to reinstall Windows and everything went well, except for two things:

1. My computer will no longer sleep. The option is greyed out.
2. I'm getting a yellow triangle by my Standard VGA Device in Device Manager. I've updated my drivers for both my chipset and my graphics card to no avail.



I think the two are related. I run a dual monitor setup from a Radeon 7770. The standard VGA runs the second monitor (as I found out when I disabled it), but it should be the 7770 driver. New video drivers don't work, and I tried installing the .inf file for the proper video card and it won't install because it says it's for a different version of Windows.

I really think that the two of these things are related. I can live with the video thing, but I really like to put my PC to sleep when I'm not using it.

Any ideas?

Well you might want to double check your bios first to make sure the power management features/options are enabled. to me I dont think the sleep and vga checkmark are related; in fact most likely they are not unless they somehow share the same irq's(interrupt request). if they somehow share the same irq's; then there will be a conflict between the 2 item that have the same irq's. I would check this. There should be a way to easily do this; only I dont recall off the top of my head 100% how to check this. If you are in windows 7; you should be able to check this by typing in irq's in search programs and files box that is at the bottom when you click the start icon.

When you installed Windows, did you have both monitors connected? You don't want to do that.

Always simplify the system to core components and just one hard drive when installing Windows. It just avoids a lot of weird problems.

Have you attempted to delete that Standard VGA adapter and restarting? (2nd monitor not connected, of course).
Sleep may be interrupted by a driver conflict, a conflict with a non existent device (I'm guessing).

I did have both monitors connected when I reinstalled. Ooops. I never thought of that.

I'll try disconnecting the monitor and delete the VGA adapter. I'll let you know what happens.

Update:

I disconnected the second monitor and deleted the Standard VGA device and rebooted. Then the PC asked me to reboot again, and reinstalled the Standard VGA device driver all by itself. This baffled me. I only have one graphics card and the second monitor wasn't connected at the time.

I repeated the procedure, turning the computer completely off instead of rebooting. Then turning it on again. Same thing happened.

I've connected my second monitor again, and it's working fine, but I have to admit that I'm confused.

As far as the sleep problem goes, I still can't sleep the PC, but it will hibernate. I can make do with that, if I can't find the cause of the PC not sleeping.

It still has the yellow triangle in it, and I get this when I look at the properties:



My motherboard doesn't have internal graphics and neither does the CPU. The graphics card has dual DVI outputs, and I run one monitor from HDMI (monitor has broken DVI port) and one from DVI. It works fine, and did work well in the past in my previous install.

In my previous install, the graphics adapter line in Device Manager showed two Radeon 7700 series entries, but this time only one and the Standard VGA entry. I've tried updating the graphics drivers, as well as the chipset drivers, and no luck. I even tried updating the driver manually, but the only option is the VGA driver. Choosing "Have Disk" will get me to the Radeon driver, but it tells me that it isn't for my version of Windows and won't load. That's weird because it's from the AMD setup package that I used to install the drivers for the video card in the first place.

I should mention that the computer is purring along nicely in every other way. No problems at all with anything. Just this yellow triangle and the sleep issue.

I can't think of any reason why that Standard VGA device should be there.
Code 12 means there are not enough resources to run the device - "disable other devices using these resources in order to use this device".
Me thinks that Standard adapter has got to go.

You could try a Clean Re-installation of the graphics card.
First, disconnect your second monitor - you could go one step further and go into Display Settings and remove it from there first.

Then do like so:

• Go to the ATI or nVidia website and download the most current known good driver and save it to an easy to find location.
• Now go into Windows Explorer and in the C: drive find the nVidia or Program Files > ATI folder (inside will be Drivers > your driver version) and delete it (the whole folder).
• Go into Start > Control Panel > Remove a Program and uninstall all programs for the video card. For nVidia, do PhysX and the Vision drivers first, then the main driver. The control panel will uninstall with the driver. For ATI, select “ATI Catalyst Install Manager” and click on “Change”, then “Uninstall All Components”. Do not restart the computer at this time.
• Run DriverSweeper to uninstall all video remnants Guru3D - Driver Sweeper . (This step may not be necessary if you are not replacing a video card)
  
• Restart the computer.
• When it reaches the desktop Windows will find new hardware and will install it's own WDDM1.1 driver. Let it. You will be asked to restart. Do it.
• Once back on the desktop you can now install the nVidia/ATI driver package for your card.

See if the Standard VGA device goes away after that.

I did everything except the Driver Sweeper. It's not available for download any more, at least at that link.

I unplugged my monitor, deleted the drivers, deleted the Standard VGA, rebooted with the monitor still unplugged...

It installed the VGA driver again, asked me to reboot. I reinstalled the graphics drivers after rebooting, then turned off my computer, reconnected the monitor and powered up again. The second monitor is working, but the VGA driver is still there.

I'm totally stumped.

That is really weird. You got to find out what that device is.
Have you tried checking the Hardware IDs for it?

Deep in the recesses of my ancient brain I recall dealing with this before, but I can't remember what it was. If it comes to me I will post back!

I believe the uninstall tool is in the CCC (Catalyst Control Center).

Did you get a chance to check the Hardware ID's?

There is an uninstall tool in the program. I've tried that too.

I did check the Hardware IDs, but I'm afraid I don't understand what to do with them, or what they mean.

Here is what you do:

There are only two 4-digit codes you are concerned with. See that first blue highlighted line? Your VEN code is 1407, and your DEV code is 8000. You make note of these.

Then you go here:
PCI Vendor and Device Lists
and enter the codes (one at a time) in the appropriate fields.

We find that the VENdor (manufacturer) is "Lava Computer Manufacturing Inc."
And that the DEVice is (most likely) a "Lava Parallel"

There are many other devices with a DEV code of 8000, but that is the only one by Lava Manufacturing.

So now I got to ask, do you have a parallel port on that machine?

Why, yes I do, and it's a Lava. It's coming out right now. Stupid thing never worked right anyway.

Be sure to uninstall it (probably Standard VGA too) in Device Manager before yanking it.
