Solved Question about Best HDD Storage Device

LF is right. I happen to have USB3 and eSata ports on this system. I made the exact same Macrium images with both ports to exactly the same disk. The eSata port was faster than the USB3 port although the specifications would suggest otherwise. There must be a lot of overhead with USB3.

My machine also has e-SATA connected to my HBA card (advertised as SATA 3 but rated at only 5Gbps) and USB 3.0 ports. When using the external dock, e-SATA is faster. My swap bays are connected to the same card. in theory, it's possible that USB 3.0 can be faster than SATA 2.0 (3 Gbps) but in practice, it usually isn't.

As long as something's faster than the max for USB 2.0, it can be listed as USB 3.0. I have some 8GB USB sticks that aren't much faster than the top end of USB 2.0 but they are still faster than my USB 2.0 sticks and the price was right ($5). Very few USB devices deliver the max speed for the standard.

I have Seagate HDD.15 4TB drives and they are absolutely great for storage. Plenty fast enough, and on sale I got them all for $150 each. I prefer a SATA or eSATA connection when possible.....I absolutely despise USB for transferring data.........that includes USB 2.0 and USB 3.0.

That is why I wanted to know the differences because I figured it wasn't as fast as advertised

it takes USB connect a couple ms longer to kick in then straight drive connected through sata

So I am good and thank you everyone I will be sure to look at a nice internal HD like the one's I already listed but if I can get a 4tb for the price Kelly is talking I'd rather just go big

The Seagate HDD.15 4TB drives are 5900 RPM, and I have Crystal Disk Mark test results that shows the sequential read/write speeds @ 150MB/s. My Seagate 2TB drives are 7200 RPM and the CDM seq read/write speeds are 175/160 MB/s. 150MB/s is more than enough bandwidth for a storage drive.

This is the model I went with: Seagate HDD.15 4TB HDD OEM

Newegg puts them on sale about twice a month for $149.

Ok ,I was here a few weeks ago for my Dad and now deciding on what i am getting myself for Christmas gift

I am running out of space from games and other things i do on here so i was looking at something as cheap as possible 2tb but a decent one

I come to discover the external drives are $20 dollars cheaper then a internal :sarc:

This one comes to 85.98 with tax Seagate Expansion 2TB SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive STBV2000100 STBV2000100 - Micro Center


Now i have been looking through the web and i have not found new egg or any other place that carries this for as low as i found it i am going to set this up for pick up

Well i was looking at refurbished drives and all i didn't want to spend over $90 to 100 for decent capacity
I could of went with a 750 but if you look at the prices those are the same prices as the terabytes it makes no fricking sense

Then i had a go at externals and found some pretty cheap so i went with it i am looking for this one on newegg to compare don't see it ???? and they are having a Seagate Christmas sale

yeah but look at the price that is how much it will cost me to pick it up in person

anyway i was reading the reviews and it doesn't sound like a good idea to order from the supplier everyone and i do mean almost everyone had a bad experience so i rather just get it myself 30 min round trip drive no biggie

You and me three. That's one reason I have a 3.5" and a 2.5" dock built into my desktop machine (the other being convenience). I only use USB sticks if I need portability or I'm moving only a few, small files to my notebook. If I have very many files going to or from my notebook, or they are large, I will dig out one of the little USB powered docks I have and snag one of my 7200 rpm 2.5" drives to make the transfer with. I would use Wi-Fi but setting it up every time (I use the notebook only occasionally) would usually be more hassle than it would be worth (not to mention not noticeably any faster).

An external HDD is actually much safer than an internally mounted HDD for backups so you are on the right track. I use internal type HDDs for my backups but they are used as external HDDs. I store them in a drawer (my setup is a bit anal and expensive but it's convenient and I'm lazy) and plug them into an internal dock only during the backup. That way, if something blows up inside my machine or I get a data corrupting virus, the backup is safe from harm.

It's not a bad thing ever i just pride myself as always on the move and not wasting any moment to relax

I guess my Father taught me well he is a Country boy from Mississippi I'll have you know my Mom is from Alabama those hard working ethics rubbed off on me

I went with a smaller drive by the way i re arranged everything and it's perfect if i need another hard drive i will get one later right now i am doing plenty good
