What's the Best Anti-virus?

I am using Baidu. It is always free.

I've been giving it a go. It's pretty light on memory, but does the tray application (BavTray.exe) always need to be running for Baidu to work properly?

AVG is nothing but over bloated garbage.

All you need on your pc is Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes AntiMalware, both are free.

I just ran Malwarebytes trial yesterday on top of my existing Avast and it (Malwarebytes) found several advertising spyware programs Avast did not discover.

I have been liking Avast (orange/white color scheme) and was about to purchase it when suddenly their new version altered the color scheme (adding in an ugly blue that has no business mixing in with the other colors) so hasta la vista Avast in terms of my buying their software. I will keep using their free version (orange/white). And scan with another anti-malware periodically like Malwarebytes.

Awful W8-style GUIs

IMO, the worst thing about the latest version of Avast is the "postage stamp sized" W8-style GUI.

Just like W8, the new GUI is harder to use.
I had to actually open up the Help files to find out where functions were hidden, something I never had to do with the previous versions.

I have AVG in my VMs and (IMO) its new W8-style GUI is awful too.

At the risk of repeating myself I think look no further than here for anti malware stuff Probably the Best Free Security List in the World

Though I must say after trying quite a few now I would not use AVG MSE Trend McAfee or Norton.

Personally I find Kaspersky works just fine by me and at a reasonable price too it isn't foolproof but I defy anyone to say there is any that are and I run MBAM SAS and ADWCleaner as on call scans.

I have no complaints about the performance of Avast or AVG.
My machines (real and virtual) seem to be free of malware.

The GUIs for security software (especially) need to be as easy as possible to use, or people won't bother to configure them properly.
Making the GUIs Phone/Tablet style, so that you have to jump through multiple hoops just to find a basic setting is ridiculous.
It's even more ridiculous when the software is supposed to be for a desktop OS.

It's been at least 15 years since I had a monitor that small.
It would have been several years old by the time I got it, as all of my PC bits were given to me by my friend (when he upgraded his system).

It's only been during the last 6 years that I have started buying new parts for my PC.
I'm ahead of the curve now, in terms of monitor resolution, thanks to ICit2lol.

The Avast GUI is 789x562 (non-resizable). :shock:

If something is annoying/hard to use, then it will be avoided/ignored.
Just look at the dismal uptake rate for W8.

A hammer with a floppy rubber handle can still bash things, but I bet it wouldn't be a big seller.

I also didn't like the new avast! 2014 interface. And I also didn't like it at all how it changed and "hijacked" my firefox browser UI and settings. I had firefox configured to look like the old versions but when avast updated it put its stupid avast "web rep" plugin into my browser and changed the UI. I also couldn't remove the avast! web rep icon. And it also seemed to make my browser slower too.
After that I switched to avira antivir and everything seems to be good, and its interface is way better than avasts hideous touch/tablet/windows 8 hard-to-navigate interface.

Yes it does, I think. But I haven't had a program update yet. Avira has also recently removed the ad pop-up window and they've also overhauled how updates work, there won't be any major version upgrades anymore. Instead, updates will be modular, so you can choose what parts of an update you want or something like that, you can read about that on their website. I haven't had any annoying pop-ups in avira, but with avast I frequenlty had to close pop-ups..

Currently I have uninstalled avast and I am using Panda antivirus free. It actually is scoring insanely high on the av comparatives and av test websites. It's also a really light AV. So I will see how this goes. In Panda they also have a built in protection against ransom ware which is really cool.

Panda does not have a addon though, so I am relying on wot due to internet explorer 11 which I have been trying out. Firefox has a lot more options with that. But oh well.

Well Mysterious I pay $50 per year for Kaspersky which = $0.13 a day as against nothing for the free ones. Bitdefender works out at $70 per year. The only difference is I suppose is the cover you get with a free one is probably not going to be so featured as the paid for.

Anyhow on pain of being repetitive see this Probably the Best Free Security List in the World section 2 is the real time stuff.

Personally I would not have AVG McAfee Trend Norton or MSE but that is my preference.
