It seems as if semi modular falls into a range of smaller but useful power ranges say 500-800w. But as you get over that then the manufacturers just offer all full modular. Nice but since there's no getting around those standard connections it makes sense to bundle them all up into one clean bundle out.

My empical method is to compare weights, the heavier the better. That said, www.hardwaresecrets.com is well worth a look for a more scientific approach.

Funny you should mention weight as with high end amplifiers this can be an excellent method.

Seasonic,Antec,Be quiet,Silver-stone,Thermaltake,corsair,Xfx are pretty much globally regarded as good brands through most if not all their series some of the older OCZ psu's were quite good although I can't comment on the new ones. out of all the things you shouldn't cheap on the power supply is definitely number one.
Corsair and seasonic are generally considered the best and the majority of builds I see here/ other fourms are using seasonic or corsair powersupplys

Can someone tell me what the point of full modular is, unless you get a choice of different length motherboard connections? Otherwise soldered joints make better sense than plug ins.

It's more for aesthetics then practicality since you can use only the cables you need

I'm using an Enermax PSU and find it really impressive.
