Win 95 floppy won't work with W7 Professional

Please see my new message. I booted from the flash stick OK. My program files came from my Workstation which is 64 bit W7 Professional and I copied them to the flash stick. Then I typed setup.exe - but when I pressed the Enter key, this is what I got: C:/WIN setup.exe. I don't know where the "WIN" came from - but the command won't execute. I got a message but, unfortunately, didn't write it down. Can you help me or should I get the text of that message and send t to you? I used a utility called Rufus to create the bootable flash drive with DOS. The instructions were much easier to follow than the first site. I don't know how to tell if the program is DOS. I think it is Windows 95.

Can you boot from the flash drive you created with rufus? Did you put setup and the other stuff on it? did you run setup.exe after booting from flash?

I have the original floppy. It reads made for Windows 3.x and Windows 95. If you still want, I'll reboot with the flash drive later and write down the error message. It just so happens that this "Database" has some important data on it that I can't retrieve unless I get it to work. Thanks for your help.

If can't see the database in #12 .
If you're sure it is a win3.x 16 bits program... it won't work on win7 x64

Yes, I'm sure. It says so on the floppy label. I guess the only way I could run it is with Windows 95 in a 'sandbox." But I don't have a copy of W95, so it's a moot point. Thanks for trying to help...............

Can confirm the program (whatever it is) opens in Windows 95 running in VMware.



BTW you ought to hone up your zip skills - you seem to have put a zip in a zip in a zip

But the database itself is not in the file list! Or am I wrong?

The contents of the zip file (excluding the extra accidental zip) come to 1.38MB. IIRC a floppy was 1.44MB. Not sure what extension the database would be, but I guess it's on another floppy.

Yes, the InfoSelect you show in the screenshot is the program I am trying to run on my Windows 7, SP-1, 64 bit machine. Can you show me how to run it?

The database resides in a different folder which I have not posted.

You are correct - I don't know the proper procedure for zipping files. I jut have never had the occasion to zip very often and it's been many years since I've done it.

To ZIP the program files, I used 7-Zip. First time I've ever used it.

What is VMware?

If it is Info Select from Micro Logic, then you might read up on their free trial and see if you can import data created by the old version

Try Linux in a virtual partition. Linux loves floppies. Here is a suggestion. You may have some fun with it.

What is VMware?

VMware is software that lets you load a different operating system on a virtual machine - a 'computer within a computer'. There's a paid version and a free one called VM player. You load the os from an iso as if you were doing it on a real machine. Its good for old Windows that won't run on modern hardware - for Win95 I specified single core cpu and 64MB ram.

You're not out of the woods yet!
Hopefully the trial version is full featured and can read the data from your old version.

Then, if the data is important to you, I whole heartedly recommend modernizing. Migrate the data (export/import) to a Windows based application.

I have no recommendations though, mainly because I'm not sure what Info Select does.

I did read something about Evernote welcoming IS folks.
