Hi, i currently got two of the Asus AEH4870 gpu's (Ati Radeon 4870 Hd). The problem is that i can't find out whether it's a hardware issue or a software issue. I've been formating and reinstalling drivers for weeks now, and disabled the HD Audio ports on the two cards but the computer always freezes. Usually only a few moments after launching a movie, or an hour or so after listening to music. The whole picture freezes, and the sound is lagging a few times and then end up playing the same sound untill I restart the computer. Most of the time I only get the "how would you like to start windows" screen, where I can choose between secure w/ and w/out wlan and such. But sometimes I even get a BIOS screen, where it tells me to go into BIOS to fix the problem.. I seriously have no clue whats wrong.. I've tried everything. And the system doesn't crash and restarts itself, it only freezes..

to troubleshooting, have you tried using 1 card at a time? to see if one of them is defective? or did you try going back to windows vista/xp to see if the problem occurs on them as well? to see if it's an OS issue or hardware...

I've used both 2x 4850 and 2x4890 in crossfire with no problems, so it's not a Seven issue.

As akramh suggested, try each card individually.

What drivers are you using?

When cat drivers start causing problems, it's always best to uninstall them, boot into safemode and run driver sweeper to clean the ATI components and then boot normally and reinstall the drivers.

Also you could try installing the drivers with only one card installed and then add the second card. If you are still having problems then the issue could lie elsewhere.

from reading this forum post I think you can try disabling one of your cards for troubleshooting, go in CCC and disable Catalyst A.I. and run on 1 one GPU, see if it freezes or not, if it doesn't, then you probably need a more powerfull PSU or you need to find a way to measure the heat to make sure your cards are not over-heating..

Is it a single 4870 or is crossfired?

Have you installed Cat 9.8 or are you using the WDDM drivers from Windows Update?

Did it suddenly stop working properly or has it never worked properly with Seven?

I have used both the default drivers from install, CAT 9.8, and then even updated to the drivers that came thru via windows update. All had no functional problems but every once and a while my system will just halt. Need a hard reset to get it back. This usually happens during down time in non-periods of load.

It has never worked stable in any configuration with 7. In vista I didn't have this problem.

I had a special update come over windows for my 4890, maybe you did too. You might as well install the 9.9 that have specific downloads for specific cards.

THey made a big difference in the direct 10 demo I tried (300%) in one area 25% in most others.

Maybe they will clear out your stuff.

ALso you never responded to this. People don't like to help if there isn't feedback.

or you need to find a way to measure the heat to make sure your cards are not over-heating..

GPU-Z to monitor temps:
GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility

Use the Log to file function in the sensor tab.

Ummm I was not the original owner of the thread, which is why that question didn't pertain. My card in my log of a crash never got over 37 degrees.

I checked AMD I don't see a catalyst 9.9? I got the one via windows update though. Is that the driver update you are referring to?

This is why its not in good form to highjack a thread.. it gets real confusing real quick.. Please start a new thread that is specific to YOUR problem..ok?
