Toshiba MQ01ABDH Hybrid Drive, 1TB with 8GB nand $90. Reviews are mixed. I have never owned a Toshiba but I do have 2 of the Seagate Hybrids, 500gb+8GB and they do offer better performance that a straight up spinner.

After several months with these hybrid drives I see a improvement when used as a OS drive, but not as much when used as a data drive. Obviously.

I'm curious what I can achieve with USB 3.0 transfer speeds using the latest cards and controllers. I have a RocketU 1142A pcie to usb 3 card in my new build. The tests I have seen look very promising.

Highpoint info is going to show it in the best possible light.

Independent review. This AnandTech review convinced me to try a pair of SSDs configured in RAID 0.

Two of these SanDisk 128 ssd's would give you a 256gb RAID 0 super ssd drive.

More power inevitably means more heat. I don't think power per se is the real issue. The PSUs should be able to deal with that.

That could be Wolfgang, these are now out of stock. I have the 750GB version in a caddy, never put it on a laptop. My laptop does have a standard 7200RPM HDD.

Hmm, that one is expensive. I paid $89 for my 1TB Seagate - it was on sale. I use it mainly for images and other backups in an open USB3 caddy.

My WD wd2500bevs came with my Dell LT, it's a 5400 rpm drive and is rated at 5v and 0.55a
My Seagate Momentus XT is 7200rpm and rated 5v and 0.58a
The Seagate Momentus XT runs 2-3 degrees cooler in my LT compared to the wd2500ebvs. You would think just the opposite. Both drives are physically identical.

I opened a new Dell Inspiron 17R I ordered for a customer last night and see it has a 5400 rpm drive. I see all the Dells with HDD's are 5400 rpm.

Understand the battery problem. But a lot of those go into desktops or external enclosures. They should have a 7200RPM option for those.

Desktops aren't the target consumer for them and external enclosures have trouble getting enough USB power on USB 2.0 unless a Y cable is used (my notebook can't run a 7200rpm HDD on a single cable) and not all laptops have enough unused USB ports for that (I think you experienced that problem recently). Seagate went for what they feel is the largest target.

Looking at power specs for Seagate, WD and Toshiba 2.5" drives, the power requirement difference between 5400 and 7200 rpm drives is 0.03-/+ amps. That's about 6%, pretty insignificant.

The 2.5" while initially for LT's, they are very popular with with desk tops now. They are great in USB 3.0 enclosures. USB 3 supplies adequate power with the single cable connection, and has tremendously better transfer speeds compared to USB 2. USB 3.0 ports come in low-power and high-power variants, providing 150 mA and 900 mA respectively while simultaneously transmitting data at SuperSpeed rates.
