Like the title says, today I did a clean install of my Windows 7 OS on my 4 year old Alienware MX15. Straight after the install was finished, I noticed my screen resolution was incorrect, however, after checking the resolution settings, I was greeted by this:

6J4hA.png

The highest available resolution I can select is 1400x1050. Which stretches my screen out noticeably.

Initially, I dismissed this as needing to install all my windows updates and graphics drivers, but with all that done, the issue is still present!

Here's the (hopefully) relevant system information:

I installed the latest ATI Catalyst drivers, but that didn't fix the problem.

Somebody, please help. Thanks.

By your DXDiag report, it looks like the driver didn't take. You're still running off of the Standard VGA Adapter. When you look at device manager, can you see your graphics card? Or do you just see the Standard VGA Adapter?

Huh... That's really weird, it' only showing the VGA adapter. I'm supposed to have a pretty high range ATI card, a Raedon HD 5xxxx series, I believe.

How do I fix this?

I would try downloading and reinstalling the graphics drivers again.

Did you install the correct ones for your GPU? Head to the AMD site and select the correct ones for your card and be sure to select either 32bit or 64bit depending on what version of Windows you have.

Download Drivers

Ah! turns out I had the wrong ones all along. And I needed to totally wipe the old drivers first, too.

Was a pain in the ass trying to locate the file I needed, but I got it working eventually, thanks all!
