Is your ram overclocked when you are trying 4.7?

If it is, try the ram at stock speed to see if that makes any difference.

well yes, but ive tried at stock and it was a no go. theres just SO much voltage required.... 1.4V for 4.7?

The wall must be 4.6 for you then. I assume it runs at a decent voltage at that speed?

I think my old 3770K needed 1.2V for 4.6, 1.35V for 4.7, 1.4 or a little more for 4.8 and then it went up very quickly.

IMO 4.6 is a perfect speed for a daily OC, anything more is just for benching.

ya i know. my everyday is 4.2. no need for faster. but i was benching, and wanted to see how high it could go. tbh, i font know the exact voltage for 4.6. i just put in 4.8 and kept uping the voltage till it could boot. let me try...

EDIT: i need abput 1.35V for 4.6GHz... i think thats WAY OFF!

maybe i do have a defective chip.... ive noticed that boot time is slower than my AMD rig, RAM can not be OCed as it was easily OCed before on my AMD rig, and GPU is not able to OC very easily too. other are getting much higher clocks on stock core. higher as in 50MHz...

i am almost positive that its not the MOBO....

Maybe i should RMA the CPU?

Boot time varies a lot from motherboard to motherboard and has nothing to do with the CPU, overclocking the graphics card has nothing to do with the CPU.

There is nothing wrong with your CPU, it is just not an "awesome" overclocker. That is all.

IMO you are being silly RMA'ing it.

i probably am, but atleast i will be able to OC higher than 4.2 without risk of killing the CPU with voltage. i plan on having this CPU for a long time.

You have no ground's to rma that chip, just because it's possibly a poor clocker doesn't make it faulty.

How well a CPU overclocks depends on several volt and power settings and experimentation, testing. Did you follow the guide that were linked too step by step? You can't skip over one thing and do another. Don't use the ROG guide for your set up.

yes i did. i set everything EXACTLY like the guide told andstill no boot. unless i had extreme voltage.

Laugh at that, but I'm upgrading to a gtx 780 now too Lol.

I bought my GPU for 300 and now sellig it for 500. The 780 costs 520

The 780 is not a bad card, I think you will like it but then again you may find it crap and RMA it because it won't overclock high enough :roflmao:
