Best AV out there?

With due respect Rich, it is because of my common sense and computer knowledge that keeps me away from MSE.

I have used it in the past and found it lacking in detection and removal of items once detected.

Then its best to agree to disagree. I have tried many, even Norton, I can get that for free and still prefer MSE in conjunction with Malwarebytes.
I guess I use them all in conjunction with Macrium Reflect, any big problem, I just use my image. Actually needed it twice.

As others have said, it's really a matter of personal preference. Some people like Ford, some like Chevy, some like Dodge when it comes to cars and trucks. And I don't believe there really is a "best" product. If there was such a thing we'd all be using it.

There is one thing that MSE never does, that all the others do on some systems, and that is cause BSOD's.

I have seen several tens of these in the BSOD section, and diagnosed a few myself......AVG, Avast, Kaspersky, Norton, Macrapee, Avira, BitDefender...almost every single one. Why only on some systems, and not others, I cannot say.

This is another reason for recommending MSE.....if its the choice between changing AV or living with a BSOD, I know which most of us would prefer.

Norton 360 does have a lot of useless "Optimizing" tools, one of which is a built-in defragger and temp file cleaner, both rubbish.

Okay we all have made our choices, that's great.
The thing I don't understand is why after as many years that Windows 7 has been out why can't 3rd party anti viruses and firewalls developers figured out how to make their programs work with Windows 7.
BSOD do keep you safe; your computer won't work.
It's like a car that can't start pollutes the least.

About BSODs.. I had one when I was using avast. I don't know what it was caused by, it just appeared like that. One day when I booted up my laptop I got nice little BSOD, I don't remember what it said but I only had to reboot the laptop and it was gone. I haven't had another BSOD since and it's the first BSOD I've ever had, heh. I wonder why it appeared at all, my PC is 100% healthy.

Has anyone else tried Kapersky, ESET or Trend Micro?

I've used and am using all 3 in one way or another.

Eset is great for Gaming, as it prioritizes full screen apps and slows it self down, whilst staying upto date and running silently. My only bugbear with this, is the popups when the DB is out of date, that it then deals with itself anyway ;@

Gamer mode is a feature in ESET Smart Security and ESET NOD32 Antivirus version 5.x and later:

Activated by default when ESET detects any full-screen application in use (games, movies, etc.).
Maximizes performance and minimizes intrusion when full-screen applications are running.
Postpones scheduled tasks (for example, virus signature database updates or scheduled computer scans).
Disables notification windows.
Minimizes CPU usage by ESET to improve system performance.

Kapersky i found does work quietly in the background and you hardly notice it, until it's needed. Also very sparse with the requirements on your hardware.

Trend, well its a Server / client AV i use in businesses. But i just like the central configuration, push out ability and the automatic updating of all clients. Very few problems with this once it's setup and going. Though initial config can be troublesome.

Yes this is always a interesting debate,
I don't begin to understand the under the hood workings of an a-v,
All I do know is I've lived without a re-install for nearly 3 years,
Windows updates and built-in programs work very well, especially Internet explorer of all versions,
Habits have not changed at all/ no question about some sites "they're Questionable"
You rarely get what you pay for so I only pay for the ones I believe work,

Just for fun you can try this test file with you own AV choice. A good AV will recognize it as malware of some sort. It is, in fact harmless and has been used for years in testing. I'm sure today's AVs would need a tougher test than the EICAR test.

Must say that those files were blocked by Chrome, before they even started downloading. Who knew?

IE10 let them all try to start, Norton did not block the zipped ones though, but when I unpacked them it did.

My IE11 Google browser (fully updated) got hijacked yesterday (No Install Chrome button/slow...), and my KIS2013 (Kaspersky Internet Security) AV failed to prevent this or detect it on All scans!

I then ran my Full on-demand scans with MBAM- Negative.

I then ran my on-demand Emsisoft-kit, and it detected/Quarantined a High-Risk browser hijacker in the registry!

The Emsisoft AV always has a High detection rate, but did Not play well with my Windows Security Center (Non-MS code... is Not recognized by WSC), and their Firewall was a BSOD pain!

Other thoughts- In the past I hated the Google Chrome nag, but now I like it!
