Cannot Create Repair Disc On Asus Laptop

Asus U46E-BAL7 laptop with Windows 7 home.

I have no windows 7 discs so I want to create a backup image on external drive and that option works but I also need to create a repair disc in order to boot from that image but that will not work. I'm using DVD-Rs, is the gossip that only CD-Rs will work to burn a repair disc true? It's not the letter drive of the DVD burner as I have tried many.

I've heard of some issues where a CD worked and a DVD did not, although I've never had the issue.

Are you locked into the idea of using Windows built-in software for this imaging and recovery job? I assume that is what you are using?

I'm interested in free software, not necessarily Microsoft. I will checkout those threads if I haven't already.
