The i7-4790 is available now and would be a good choice since there will be no overclocking. Note that is the so-called "Haswell Refresh" and you'd need a Z97 board.

But the stock clock on the 4790k is 4 GHz with a turbo boost up to 4.4 GHz - significantly higher than the 4790 @ 3.6/4 (by 22%). So if even if you don't overclock, the k is a better choice.

the first Haswells have the Voltage Regulator Module (VRM) on the CPU die, this led to lots of heat if OCing. The refresh moves the VRM back on the motherboard.

No it doesn't. Where in the world did you get that?

Haswell refresh = slightly better binning of the Haswell to get 100 MHz more.

4790k and 4690k = Devil's Canyon = better Thermal interface material between the die and Integrated heat spreader, + Integrated voltage regulatar parts more spread out on the die in order to better dissipate heat, + better front end capacitors to smooth out input voltage.

They ALL use the on-die integrated VRM just like the original Haswell.

The Devil's Canyon has better thermal properties and is binned for higher frequency.

22% is noticeable otherwise why overclock at all? And this isn't an overclock, it is basically for free so why would you even consider choosing a process that performs less by 22%?

The Haswell refresh is try to solve the temp problem the old Haswell had. All of them didn't have the problem but enough did for a Intel update (refresh).

The Haswell refresh (4790 and 4690) did absolutely nothing to address the heat issues with the Haswell.

The Devils Canyon (4790k and 4690k) are attempts at addressing the issues as I mentioned in a previous post.

Yeah the argument is the same, so are the results, no performance gain. We've checked and rechecked in file transfers, video encoding, in-game FPS, etc. A CPU overclock, or turbo boost, or however it runs faster, doesn't help these things. By "we", I mean in the overclocking forums here.

Boosting the GPU frequency can help video related tasks though.

For games sure, but we are not talking about games here, right? We are talking about video editing, that utilizes the CPU and is not graphics bound, so that CPU boost will be a direct benefit.

And get your information right about the recent Intel releases.

I mucked that up. I was thinking about this thread when the Newegg ad came in email and for some reason I saw a K that was not there. The 4790 has been out for a while now.

EDIT:

As far as I know Intel has no plans to move the voltage regulator back on the motherboard. Their low-power strategy depends on it being on-die under their control.

Doing that with a brand new CPU is insane. It would be like buying a new car knowing you need to replace the fuel injectors right away. A fun project, yes. But economically insane.

Thanks for the info on the 4790K. I will keep my eye on the articles to see if the heat issue is actually solved. I do not need to be dealing with that phone call from 2000 miles away!

Unfortunately Skylake is too far away for this build in computer space-time.
