Solved Change Drive Letter of non existent CD-Rom

Hi,
i need to have a drive D:\ that i can use foe symlinks etc. so i created a 20MB partition on my SSD drive. The drive must get the drive letter D:\ because of path reasons for production stuff.
Now when i use the Win 7 Drive Manager, there exists a CD-ROM drive that hijacks the D: drive letter.
I went to the boot menu and deactivated the DVD/CD drive, but it seems that the DVD/CD drive has 2 recognition components, one as DVD and one as CD-ROM. But it doesn't show in the boot-manager.

Actually now i have even removed the drive from the laptop, but the CD-ROM seems to be reserved in a way under Win7.

Any tips around on how to get drive letter D:\ booked on my SSD partition ?

Re-enable the DVD drive
Change it's drive letter in Disk Manager to U or any other letter than D

If you ever reinstall or use a restore point prior to making the change, you'll have to change the DVD drive letter again.

Any device you plug in will take the lowest letter available, so if you plug in a thumbdrive, you'll have to assign that a higher letter too.

It might be better to change your production scheme to use a higher letter (P for example). I don't know the details of your production, so while it might be better, it might not be easier.

Why U? It's geek - the file system on optical drives are UDF. Put a normal disc (not one you burned) in your DVD drive and look in Disk Manager.

Hi, thx for your reply. I just solved it by uninstalling PowerISO, it was creating that phantom CD-ROM drive.

Good news, I should have looked at the image closer.
You still might have a D issue when you connect another storage device - just a heads up.

thx Bill for heads up. For now after i re-installed the DVD and restarted, it still left D:\ on the extra partition, as setup in Drive Manager.

You're welcome Frank and thank you for marking the thread closed.

There might be a way to lock the letter D out of assignment for new drives. I don't know of any off the top of my head, but there's a lot of things I don't know.
