NAS shows up as media device?

Ok I have a NAS from airlink and it was working fine on my laptop with windows 7. Then at some point it stop showing up on my laptop, but I was still able to access my NAS from my XP Pro desktop. I used the config utility to change the network name on the NAS from HOMEGROUP to MSHOME and now I can see my NAS again on windows 7, but it is showing up as a media device and every time I double click on it the windows media player launches. Any help is greatly appreciated. PS I have already set the NAS back to its default settings except for the network name which I changed to MSHOME since that is the network name that all my computers are assigned to.

In the explorer you can create a mapped drive from it.

OK, when I said "logged in" I was refering to logging onto the NAS. For example, mine is set with a local IP of 192.168.1.110. If I put that into Internet Explorer, I get the log on screen from the NAS. (Your logon procedure will be different, but basically we are talking about logging into the NAS itself.)

From there, I put in the userid (admin, and the password I have set - the default was, as I recall "admin"). At that point, I can do administrative stuff on the NAS, like set the workgroup name and, most importantly, the permissions.

Now, when I do the permissions stuff, my NAS has an "advanced" tab. Here is where the "Media" tab is located, and under that is the service for iTunes. If that is set as "enabled", the NAS shows up in the media part of the network.

As squonksc asked, do you have folder set as shared? If you do, one (or more) may be set as "public" and/or "shared music".

It probably is a common default setting on home NAS drives, as they would assume that you would want to share (large) music files.

You can map the drive in explorer, just like you would any other shared drive. (I just took a quick look at the documentation for an Airlink 101, and there are directions on how to do it in there, if that is the drive you have.)

Hang in there - squonksc is an expert, and I have a NAS also, and there are many eager experts here - we'll get this sorted out...

I looked at every tab in the config utility and there is nothing that has to do with media. Now if I go to my PC that has XP Pro I have the drive mapped there and I can see all my movies and documents. When I go back to my laptop with windows 7 my NAS shows up in the network tab under “media device” along with my Xbox 360. When I double click the NAS to open it so that I can see my movies, programs, and documents it opens in with WMP and not windows explorer. My PC with XP Pro opens the NAS with windows explorer. At one point my NAS was showing up under “computer” of the network tab and I was able to see all my documents just fine, but at some point it changed from “computer” to “media device” and that is when I was unable to view my files from my laptop with windows 7. Sorry for the long response

Mine shows up as "Computer", along with the other systems, and also as "Media Device" and "Storage". When I click on the "Computer" icon for it, I get all the folders.

You can map it in the explorer (not IE) like this.
Example:

On the explorer bar, chose "map network drive"

Type
\\192.168.1.15\documents
(something that represents your situation of course)

Click on "log on with different credentials"

In the next dialog type username and password of the nas.

Click ok,

Now click next and that should do it.

For this to work you have to have a folder, or the whole drive shared in the nas.

Sorry I was not trying to drop a subtle hint at all. No my NAS does not show up as a computer any more under network. I only shows up as media device and that is why I can not see all my folders on the NAS with my laptop.

Ok I tried mapping it just like you said and it is unable to find 192.168.1.100\C that is the first folder that contains everything the only other folder is usb and that’s if I have something hooked up to the NAS via usb then it will be in that folder.

Do you have a 3rd party firewall installed or only windows firewall?

Yeah if I could only get this stupid thing to show up under comptuer again and not media device then I would be ok.

Would you mind disabling it for test purpose?

After disabling, reboot and see if the NAS shows up as computer again in network.
