Hello All,

Hope you are doing well. Before I go one to explain my predicament, my system specs are given below.

1. Samsung Ultrabook Series 5 - Model NP530U3C-A01UK
2. Processsor - Intel Core 5-3317U CPU @1.70 Ghz
3. Windows 7 Hope Premium - 64 Bit OS
4. No Optical Drive

From last few days Windows has been warning me saying there is a problem with my Disk and I should backup. But whenever I ran Windows backup I never succeded. I should have backed up my files atleast but the lazy bum that I am, I did not do that. One fine day my system went to sleep and it was unable to wake up. When I tried to hardboot it, it went to Windows Start Up repair. After the Startup repair ran, it came up with the disgnostic results saying cannot startup because of Bad hard disk. Even when i try to start up in the safe mode, it still goes to Startup repair. I tried the other options in the Startup repair but to no avail. I tried a bunch of options using command prompt like FIXMBR but still no use.

I am out of warranty so cannot go to samsung.Could you please help me in terms of what I can do? Some of the questions on my mind are:

1. Since the laptop doesnt have a CD Drive, is it possible to run recovery software froma USB Stcik? If yes, where can I find the recovery software?

2. Would I be able to retrieve the data from my hard disk?

3. How do I for sure know that the hard disk is gone?

Any help is greatly appreiated. Thanks in advance.

With regards,
Avisesh.

Hello Kaktussoft,

Thanks a ton for taking time out to help.

I cannot see Advanced Boot Options. When I start up the system, it seems like it loading . I see option below like F2 for XXX F4 for Safe mode. When I try them nothing happens. The screen after a few seconds shows Windows is loading files, then Start Up repair screen comes up.

I think I do have the option of going to Command Prompt on the startup repair window.

WIth Regards,
Avisesh.

Edit - On researching I just came to know that you need to press F8 for Advanced Start Up options as given by this link http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/...tup-options-including-safe-mode#1TC=windows-7 . I am currently at work will go home and see if I can get into Advanced Boot Options menu.

Edit Again - Apologies, I did not notice that the link you provide also says to press F8.

You're still able to do http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/666-advanced-boot-options.html ?
"repair your computer" option works? Don't select "startup repair" afterwards but "command prompt". In command prompt:
Code:
diskpart
select disk 0
list part
list vol
exit
Post results.

Hello Kaktussoft,

I was able to reach Advanced Boot Options by using the F8 button. But no matter what I try the Start Up repair is initiated. After Startup repait finishes I can login using my password and goes toa System Recovery Options menu. There I was able to open the command prompt and run the code you asked me to. Please find attached image which shows the results.

I tried to login using Safemode but it still wen to Startup Repair. Tried to use the last good configuration option but it still led me to the same place.

My gut feeling is that my harddisk is not completely dud and its just the windows which got corrupt and unable to start. But what do I know anyway. :)

With Regards,
Avisesh.

Hello Kaktussoft,

Thanks again for your assistance. Much appreciated.

Please find the screen shots of the Screen 9 output you asked for. These were taken a couple of days back. I will run the code which you gave today after I get home and post results.

chkdsk/f d: has been running for about 12 hours now. I have left it to run but posting the interim screenshot.

I have ordered for a harddisk enclosure. Do you think its alright if I remove the hardisk from the notebook and try to retrieve the contents by connecting it to another system?

Just what I thought. Win7 partition has disk errors. It says "file record segment xxx unreadable". Message starts at 3%. It continues to 99%?

Run command again please. All errors have been repaired? Is it a seagate or western digital disk?

Message has been stuck at 3% since last night. Though it is reading segment by segment slowly. Not all segements are unreadable but a few. So its not completely stuck as you can see from the screenshot. There are a lot of file segments and its taking its own time. Should I let it run its course or cold boot and try runningthe command again? Either ways I could do this only after I get home today.

I dont know what kind of hard disk it it. Would it be possible to findout using the model number (NP530U3C-A01UK) ? Or should I open it and find out?

Since you surmise that its windows partition which has errors, does it mean that I can salvage some data out of the harddisk by conencting it as extern HDD to another computer if all the errors are not fixed??

In that "command prompt" you can run notepad (just type notepad and press enter). Now do file/open and an open file dialog appears. Select the folders you wish and do copy. Now paste somewhere on external drive. Or use backup software like Macrium Reflect (bootable dvd) to make a backup. Report back if it fails (for example due to read errors).

Use SEATOOLS bootable CD (search yourself, otherwise I have the ISO). Or western digital data lifeguard. You can test for hardware errors. Report back the results

But do you see a problem if I can take the hard disk out, use the enclosure and connect it via usb to some other system to copy my files?
