Hi and welcome

An ISO doesn't need a key till its installed as an OS, "backup or otherwise" Ms eula says you can use it on 1 desktop and 1 mobile.

But, I'm still a little confused here. My point of doing this is to make Windows 7 Ultimate my main OS with a legit product key so I can get all the necessary updates.

If I where to download the iso and install it using a product key for windows 7 pro. Will it work as it would had I provided a windows 7 ultimate product key?

No, the product keys for different versions won't activate each version. Pro won't activate Ultimate, just as a Home Basic key wouldn't activate Home Premium.

Keys are independent of the architecture (32bit/64bit).

The way this question is phrased, the correct answer is MAYBE.

The version of windows 7, whether 32 bit or 64 bit, MUST BE THE SAME. So a home premium key will not activate Ultimate or Pro no matter what. So a Pro key will not work to activate Ultimate no matter what.

But an x86 Ultimate key will work to activate x64 Ultimate. Clear now?

No - one key one OS install. It's one or the other - not both.

When you load the key the second time it will say it has already been used.

Well the one key thing is not entirely true, or in MSDN anyway. I have used one key for ultimate and am running on 4 diff computers at the same time and no problems =)

Its when you have 1 key and 11 computers when the problem starts to come up.

You're not supposed to be able to.

It's normally one key = one machine.

You can install either 32-bit or 64-bit with that key, but not to two different machines simultaneously.

Until things are actually formally out and running (outside of Technet / MSDN keys), no one will know for sure if they may be lenient this time for the desktop / laptop thing.
