NVIDA Driver Install - Start To Finish...

I've started this thread because it seems a lot of people seem to be having issues installing NVIDIA drivers under Windows 7. I need to use the following method due to the following reason...

If I go ahead and try to install the driver direct from NVIDIA without a modified INF, this is what I see...

I have written this based on a fresh install of Windows 7, and can be applied to 32bit and 64bit systems.

Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.

The drivers.

The only site I use is laptopvideo2go.com, because they have a huge database of current and older drivers. You can download them from directly from NVIDIA if you wish, but I just find it easier to get them and the INF from the same place. What is most important however is the modified INF, because that is what will allow you to install the drivers.

The guys at laptopvideo2go.com modify the INF file and make it available to download separately.

The INF for this driver supports up to 209 models, so if your card is on the list, it should work on your system.

1. Download and extract.

On this PAGE, you will find the latest drivers, as well as older versions so find the ones you want and "Download Driver", and you will also need to download the "INF Modified" to go with the driver...

Click on the application...

Extract to location of your choice...

2. Copy and replace the INF.

Exactly that, copy the INF you downloaded in to the folder of the extracted driver, and replace the original.

3. Install and reboot.

Run the setup.exe in the folder you extracted, you may be prompted with the following...

So click "Install this driver software anyway", and reboot when required, and Windows should then recognize your card as it should be.

How can I tell if the 190.62 will work for me? When I go to nvidia's site they tell me that the 186.81 is the one for my computer and when I install that driver I can't even get my computer to boot in anything other than safe mode.

No dice on that. I followed your instructions exactly and my computer still failed to boot. The starting windows logo flickered and then the screen went black where the computer then hung up. Can you think of any other possibilities?

There are special drivers from Windows update for the Asus notebooks running the 8600M GS and Windows 7.

No luck with that one either, system still won't boot when the nvidia driver is enabled.

Not a bad write up, but I disagree.
You should get drivers directly from the source. Therefore, get NVidia drivers for the NVidia site, and ATI from the ATI site.
using a third party site/program allows for not only your error, but another persons. This, therefore, is an uncontrollable variable that increases your change of getting a bad file, or the wrong one.

Installing the driver from the site is even easier than your method. Simply download, and install. For the average user, this is much easier.

If you wrote this intending for it to be a sticky guide to installing graphics drivers, then I would neg rep you.

EDIT: In some cases, (as in pre-built computers from a major OEM), you should go to the MANUFACTURERS site for drivers. They will often have the latest, as well as the one specific to your computer. This is much safer, though in my experience, a PITA.

this is silly. there are a lot of computers that can't get the drivers from the manufacturer's site nor the vendor's site. this is because specific drivers for a lot of computers simply don't exist yet or possibly never will. there are a lot of hybrid pc's out there that have integrated cards such as mine which is a dell xps all-in-one. the hardware ID of my card is specific to my machine and will not work with nvidia drivers. none of those crappy third party sites make an INF file for my machine. going from vista 32-bit to windows 7 64-bit is a big jump and i had a hell of a time modifying INF files myself before i finally got the right driver to take. dell will probably never support x64 for my machine and therefore will never supply drivers.

bottom line is that a generic solution only works for generic problems and most people on this forum have very specific problems that a generic solution is obviously not going to work for.

Not to be argumentative, but it was my belief the drivers at laptopvideo2go are the exact same, apart from having to extract them, as you would get from NVIDIA, but are only modified and considered 3rd part once you overwrite the original INF?

I did not say that any of the systems was perfect. Just pointing out that you should install drivers from the manufacturer's site, not a third party. This avoids any possibility of them being modified. Also, most users find it easier to use the installer as opposed to having to install the INF through the more circuitous route.

As for OEM drivers, some are done well, some are not. Depends on the OEM.

My point is that in general, it is far better to get them from NVidia or direct manufacturers website. This is safest, most secure, and most accurate.

Probably is, but I have to use a modified inf because I get error messages otherwise, regardless if they're straight from NVIDIA or laptopvideo2go.

As I've already stated, they don't install on my system. Tell you what, you find the driver on NVIDIAs site for my card, and I'll screen shot the install process to show you what I mean, and if what happens that usually does, it will tell me that it can't find any compatible hardware on my system or something along those lines.

Did this OS come pre installed, or did you DL and install it?

It came installed with Vista Home Premium, but have done many clean installs since, and now I have Windows 7 x64.
