Hi there

Have an old Canoscan N1240U DONKEYS years old - not sure how old - running still on an XP VM - runs perfectly. It won't even run on W7 unless you use VUESCAN.

(Vuescan also works on W7 but with XP I can still use all my old Canon software and ACQUIRING stuff.

Note these older scanners use TWAIN - modern ones use WIA which is probably why Windows 7 and Windows 8 don't support the older models as TWAIN has been dropped.

Cheers
jimbo

I have HP Laser 1010 Black and White printer. It is almost 5 years old i guess. I am also having Canon Pixma MG5750 color and photo printer but not using it anymore as the ink is not efficient. I could hardly print 15 pages before the ink runs dry. I would always prefer laser printers if i am going to buy printer in future.

Why do you think TWAIN has been dropped? My flatbed uses TWAIN and it works just fine on Win 7. Many new scanners still use TWAIN.

The reason many older scanners won't work on Win 7 and/or Win 8 is their manufacturers won't write specific drivers for them.

I have a Samsung CLP 415NW color laser printer that is 22 months old. I would still be using my old HP 1300 LaserJet but I couldn't find toner cartridges that didn't have expired chips and HP wouldn't write a driver for Win 7 (HP is notorious for stunts like that, one of several reasons I'm boycotting them).

I have two scanners. The one that gets the heaviest use by far is my ScanSnap S1500 ADF (Automatic Document Feed) duplexing scanner. I've had it almost five years. Despite extremely heavy use, it is still running strong. This is one scanner that isn't TWAIN compliant. It scans directly to JPEG, uses Adobe Acrobat to scan directly to PDF (including searchable PDFs; the scanner also comes with OCR software), and Word docs. I use it for home office paperwork reduction (pretty much paperwork elimination) and scanning my enormous book collection to PDFs (a long, arduous process still in progress that would have been impossible using a flat bed scanner). Despite being a lightning fast, versatile, compact, little workhorse I would never be without, it does have some limitations, the main ones being mediocre color scanning and paper size, resolution, and paper weight limitations. For example, it can't handle cardboard or other thick items, especially if they are rigid (such as plastic), or paper wider than 8.5".

My other scanner is a Canon 9000F CanoScan flatbed scanner. I use it for old photos and other high quality color scans and for items I can't feed through my ADF scanner. This scanner is TWAIN compliant. I've had it about four years.

Used to have an hp 6L. These were known to have feed issues but I don't print much at all so one sheet at a time for 10 years was ok. Then one fine recent day it just crapped itself. So I Bought a Samsung LJ off newegg.

Our Canon is about 5 years old & it'll be around for a while. Unfortunately, during the 3 month summer break, I had no reason to print any color documents & all the color heads clogged. Yes, I know now I should have run a color doc at least every couple weeks. So in the future, anyone that has a inkjet printer, be sure to run a color doc once in a while. It still prints good b/w docs, that's all we need for now.

BTW, I went so far as to try soaking the printing part of the head in alcohol for a few hours...no good.

Right now I have a Samsung ML-1865 laser printer working. So far so good with it, almost 3 years old and still without major problems.
My first printer is still in home, now collecting dust, a Citizen 200GX dot matrix one! Almost 20 years old by now, and I suppose it still works if I plug it. The last time it actively used it was around 5/6 years, with XP. Win7 may also use it. Problem is finding ink for it.

Kodak 2150 ESP Office
Kodak ESP 3250
Both about 4 or 5 years old.
In the closet behind me I have a HP PSC 1410 just resting. This HP is about 6 or 7 years old. Years ago I use it for photos but the photo paper and ink was costing a kings ransom to do photos. People wanted me to print photos free. That's why it is still in the closet.

All the rest of the printers through the years I gave away to folks that needed a printer.

I have 3 HP 930C workhorse printers. Bought one and got 2 free ones from work when they threw them out after replacing them with machines that did not last. These are at least 10 years old and work on Windows 7&8 64 bit. My scanner is an Agfa SnapScan 600 which uses the SSCI interface and the last driver for the card was a 64 bit Vista driver which works fine under 7. Bought it in 1998 when the PC was running Windows 95 with 128mb of ram. The software only works with 32 bit Windows so I use Vuescan and the scans are fantastic.

If anyone has a scanner that no longer works under modern Windows I recomend you try out Vuescan. It will breathe new life into your machine.
