Well things look as is they are going in the right direction - glad it is working out.
If you want to recover the 250GB drive and flip a 120GB in instead there is a way of drag and dropping (cloning) the partitions with Macrium.
I have used this on my partners laptop although there has been a few glitches which I suppose you can do without. But if it doesn't work the 250 can always be put back in

It was an anytime upgrade unfortunately - not my first choice. If it was our main laptop I would probably want to try doing as you say, but it seems to be working ok and gets limited use from 6 year-old. Thanks for all your help though - I kind of wish I had persevered over doing a clean install and getting the drivers and software etc back on, but was too scared of sobs from child if I messed it up! I seem to remember it was quite a hassle getting the anytime upgrade as they technically don't do them any more for Windows 7 I think - it took a couple of phone calls.

Good point! I hadn't thought of that - very good idea! Although - not sure I could face getting that blooming keyboard out again - it's already a bit bent at one corner and a new keyboard is £40. They really weren't designed to be taken apart and it probably isn't 'water resistant' any more now!

Sorry Hazel I wasn't thinking and just thought it would be like an ordinary laptop and just flipping a door off and installing

No problem! It's a good idea. I spent almost a day trying to work out how to get into it and eventually found some obscure foreign post that said - take the keyboard off and get in that way! Ungrateful child doesn't want to play with it now - he's been using my Eee pc with Linux on and is hooked on Tux Racer. Still it is up and running whenever anyone wants to use it! Thank you very much for all your help people!

Lol! Reverse psychology usually works - I will ban him from using it and start using it myself - then he'll want to use it again.
