Hi,

I am running into issues with IE11 not working well in my environment and would like to drop down to IE10. However IE10 was never installed via Windows Update, so when I uninstall IE11 in installed updates, I end up back on IE8. But then when I try to update to IE10 I get a 9c59 error, and every resolution I have been able to find fails. And when I try to install it manually via a download, it also fails. But if I let Windows Update install IE11 again, it works fine.

So now I am back on IE11 and want to somehow get back to IE10. Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks,

Hi thanks for the updated info,
Do you have any third party tracking protection lists installed or add blockers ?

First I would uninstall Java completely if you did a full reset it did not get disabled,

Well yes Java was disabled with the reset, but I enabled it again because I need it to work with some online forms I use. As far as other security applications installed, I use the Trend Micro Internet Security Suite. I am getting a little confused at this point as to the end goal we are working toward. I was trying to figure out how to successfully get back to IE10, but I don't see how disabling Java or what version of Flash I have, is going to aid in that endeavor. I have some web enabled forms and web applications that I use, that aren't working correctly in IE11, but do in IE10 or lower.

Hi,
Can't unless you have another computer with it installed on,
Microsoft has removed all download links for prior versions only ie11 exist now,
It's not offered via windows updates either wrong move uninstalling the update and deleting remnants,

I was attempting to figure out the Real issue which is obvious now with your last reply,
Trend Micro ..... ;)

You can try system restore to an earlier time,
or another browser if you don't want to get rid of trend.....
Cheers.

Well I have an IE10 download already, and when I was back on IE8 earlier this week, I was actually given a recommended update in Windows Update for IE10. The problem is, now that I have updated to IE11 once, and go in and uninstall the update, then both the Windows Update option for IE10 and the stand along installation for IE10 fail during installation. I'm just trying to figure out what hidden files or registry entries or etc. need to be deleted, so that an IE10 installation will take.

When IE10 was first released it had some pre-requisite software

You could try rolling back to IE9 and then make sure the IE 10 pre-req KBs are not installed.
Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 SP1 Installation Prerequisites

The installation of Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 SP1 includes the installation of some additional required components and prerequisites, based on the target operating system.

Uninstalling one of these prerequisites, KB 2670838 - A platform update is available for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, will result in uninstallation of IE10.

If any of the other required components and prerequisites are uninstalled, Internet Explorer 10 may experience reliability issues. If uninstalling the RTM version of KB2670838 from a previous Release Preview version, you will need to uninstall the Release Preview version of KB2670838 as well before it appears as completely removed.

Uninstalling Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 SP1 will leave the prerequisites still installed. For a list of required prerequisites, see KB 2818833 - Internet Explorer 10 for Windows 7 Installation Prerequisites.

Before you try to install IE 10, you should check your system file integrity.
Please follow the instructions in OPTION TWO of http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

Copy C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log to your Desktop (it is a protected file so you cannot attach the original)

Attach the copy of the entire CBS.log to a new post.

I'm not sure if any of this will work - but it did when I had issues with 10 and 11. I rolled back to 8, then up to 9, 10 and 11 - it seems as the that interim time for 10 and 11 was difficult for many people and the issue your machine is exhibiting might be an artifact. I have reinstalled a few times since then (for other testing) and I went from IE 8 directly to IE 11 without any issues. I don't know if IE 10 contains the pre-req platform or is it will go get it, but it will give you a different error if it needs it and it's not there.

Don't add anything to the IEs as you go, just install (restart is often a good idea) and get to 10, then you can add things in.

Thanks

Yes well I was running IE10 and I had to go back to IE9 all I did was to download IE10 and save it as a run application. When my employer wen to IE10 I just installed the 10 after getting rid of 9. This process went on to IE11 etc etc However I do remember an update fro IE10 - problem is I cannot get the download for IE10 on this machine as it is running 8.1 in 7 style or I would post the download for the OP. If I was at home I could do that from my main desktop, but I do notice the IE10 is available from Softonic and sites like that.

Hi,
Post where the download for ie10 is,
Test with a new administrator user account,
Cheers.
The OP already has the installation file for IE10, but here is an MS link...
Download Internet Explorer 10 from Official Microsoft Download Center

View attachment 335634

...and for IE9:
Download Internet Explorer 9 from Official Microsoft Download Center

Installing either of those files will cause the computer to download more files. My guess is, the links above are not to the most recent installer for either browser version. You can run the install while the computer is not connected to the internet and you will get a functional copy of IE9 or IE10 - so the files are indeed complete stand alone installation files. I guess MS does not want to let us download the most recent installation files. The norm seems to be to download a 40+MB file that in turn, downloads about that amount again during the installation. This is not a good deal for those that pay for each byte that they download :-(
/rant

The OP mentioned that the install for IE10 fails with a "9c59 error". There are lots of "9c59 error" threads. Most require Noel's magic touch.

@Slartybart,
The computer in question rolls back from IE11 to IE8. The computer never had IE9 or IE10 installed... so, it should not be possible for the computer to roll back to IE9 as you requested. There is a slim chance that installing IE9 will let the OP install IE10 without getting the "9c59 error"... but I would not hold my breath. Chances are, the OP will see the "9c59 error" when installing IE9 too. As a test, the OP can roll back to IE8, then install IE9 - followed by installing IE10.

I'll sit back and watch others work their magic with the CBS log and the Windows Update problems.

P.S. Great, I was post #11 :-(

Yes, I have the downloaded executable file from the same link as provided above, and it's true that it does seem to need to download more during the install. I think after reading all of these responses, I am going to try to revert back to IE8 again, then try to install IE9 while not connected to the internet, and see if that finishes ok. If so rinse and repeat for IE10.

Thanks,

I have been following and personally 8 would probably make things more difficult I would start from 9 and work up. The link User sent you I was going to send as well but thought things were going well so didn't.

Here is a list of them Internet Explorer - Microsoft Download Center I cannot give you the exact download because the 8.1 on this machine drives me nuts telling me it is incompatible with it:mad:

If it were not for the increase in speed I would go back to 7 to be frankly honest.

Thanks,
All of the prior download links I had were useless because it looks like Microsoft altered the pages to a more windows 10 looking interface or ie11 I suppose with no side or bottom borders,
So they just redirected all of them to the main ie11 download page
Thanks for the input and new link UNI good to see you lurking again ;)
Cheers.
Ha I forgot I'm using windows 10 at the moment :p

The OP mentioned that the install for IE10 fails with a "9c59 error". There are lots of "9c59 error" threads. Most require Noel's magic touch.

@Slartybart,
The computer in question rolls back from IE11 to IE8. The computer never had IE9 or IE10 installed... so, it should not be possible for the computer to roll back to IE9 as you requested. There is a slim change that installing IE9 will let the OP install IE10 without getting the "9c59 error"... but I would not hold my breath.

IE 8 was depreciated in the Spring of this year I only found this out when playing with Hyper-V and install a fresh Win7 from the SP1u ISO on a Virtual Machine. When I ran through the process before, all IE's were offered in Windows Update (WU), but during the most recent exercise in the VM, only IE 11 was offered. That's why I asked about a IE9 download - thanks for posting the information.

The key might be the platform update (IE 10 pre-req) I mentioned before - uninstalling that AND running SFC might get wherestheanykey past the Nine Charlie Five Niner error :geek:

PS: The Any key is just above the Fix key on the numeric keypad. As you can see, it is a key sequence, not a single key :)
@wherestheanykey: Wait until a member looks at the CBS information before installing IE9.
There might be a fix to the WU store required.

Steps to take:
Uninstall IE 11
Restart your machine
What browser is installed?
IE 10?
Uninstall IE10
Uninstall KB 2670838 if in your list of Windows Updates
-> 2670838: A platform update is available for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

The other pre-req KBs don't seem to be that important:
2729094: An update for the Segoe UI symbol font in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2 is available
2731771: An update that provides new APIs for conversion between local time and UTC in Windows 7 or in Windows Server 2008 R2 is available
2533623: Microsoft Security Advisory: Insecure library loading could allow remote code execution
2786081: Internet Explorer 10 does not save credentials for a website after you log off from or restart a computer that is running Windows 7 SP1 or Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1

But it's possible one of those might be causing the 9c59 error. If you still get the error, roll back to IE 8 again and remove all of the IE10 pre-reqs if they're on your system (sorry about that, but I can't think of any other 'clean' way of doing it). Hopefully it's just that pesky platform update

Restart your machine
What browser is installed?
... you know the drill, roll back until IE8 (as UNI said) and run the System File Checker

Let's see how far that gets you.

Bill

I originally got my IE10 download from the same site as posted a few posts back. Now I have also downloaded the executable for IE9 and thought I'd give that a try. So far, I have uninstalled the update to IE11 and went back to IE8. Then I tried to run the downloaded IE9 executable, while disconnected from the internet, but it failed. Then I tried it while connected to the internet, and it also failed.

So next I am going to try uninstalling the posted KB2670838 update and use the SCANNOW command.

You are welcome :-)

As far as the Windows Updates offering past IE versions:
...starting with IE8 installed
...check for updates
...hide the update that takes you to IE11
...then check for updates again
...it should offer you an older versions of IE.

I just now tested that and I expected WU to offer me IE10, but I was offered IE9 after hiding the IE11 update in a VM that only has IE8. Perhaps MS has decided to agree with us:
re: it is best to install each version in order :-)

Right now I am on IE8 and Windows Update is showing a recommended update for IE10 and an optional update for IE11. But no option for IE9. Maybe there is a KB update that needs to be removed before IE9 will show up.

I just uninstalled all of the KB's listed in Slartybart's post (#15) and still am not seeing IE9 as an update offered by Windows Update. I am going to try to do the SCANNOW process now.

Thanks,
