After replacing my hard drive, the Windows update service will not run.
I have done this:
CONTROL PANEL
ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS
SERVICES
in there I go to the service called
WINDOWS UPDATE
It's current status TYPE is:
AUTOMATIC (DELAYED START)
and it's STATUS is:
STARTED

i've rebooted and still it won't check for updates

In Windows Explorer, SEARCH isn't working at all. If I enter a filename I know exists, there is no response - not even "no results found" When I select TYPE: there is no list returned.

When I attempted to run TROUBLESHOOTING it would not run.

Could you expand on 'wont run'? Do you get any errors when attempting to start it; what about when checking for Windows updates?

How was the PC restored after HDD replacement? With Recovery Disks or a Windows 7 Disk?
What OS did you restore to, be specific: Windows 7 SP1 x64, Windows 7 no Service pack, x86 ect

What Processor is PC: AMD or Intel?

Won't run means:
..for example, I enter a filename (one that I know is in the folder), I hit enter...nothing happens. I get no error message; there is nothing saying "no files found"; there is no green background moving across the path panel as happens when there is no index. Nothing

When checking for windows updates, I get an error shield and when I click CHECK FOR UPDATES I'm told "the service is not running"

Don't know the process - was done by someone else

OS is Windows 7 Home Premium SP1

CPS is Intel i7

The windows update service is STARTED! Why do you think it isn't?
Check manually for windows updates. What error message?

I think it hasn't started because when I attempt a Windows Update from the control panel I get a big red X and am told the service isn't running.
Also, SEARCH in EXPLORER is still dead as a doornail.
A stretch for me to believe these two things aren't related in some way.

Did he just do a reinstall on the new Harddrive (so many applications are gone)?

Harddrive replacement was done via cloning. Nothing else touched.
But, oops...I forgot...he also installed a USB 3 card

No installed applications seem to have been damaged. I've run Lightroom, Photoshop, Outlook 2003, Firefox and a few more.
The problems seem entirely at the Windows utility level.

re: screenshot of error.... now, when I attempt to run Windows Update, instead of the error I'm getting a spinning wheel - Windows is churning and not completing. I've only given it a minute before killing the process, but it usually is instantaneous.

So just a disk clone. That will just act as with old disk. USB 3.0 card drivers ... very unlikely it will give you this kind of problems. Is it possible the problems already occurred before cloning the disk?

UPDATE:
Installed newer Intel device driver for the hard drive (5 years elapsed from the original drive and the new one) and I can now run Windows Update
BUT
Windows Explorer Search is still not working, although it is now saying "not found" rather than doing nothing.
Am in the process of re-indexing. Will report back.

The problems seem entirely at the Windows utility level.

I fail to see how doing anything to the hard drive is going to fix Windows Updates or Windows Explorer.

I recommend you complete Noel's post #13.

Failed IRST drivers do indeed cause a number of problems - including a non-genuine status and failing updates.

Sorry Noel and all. I did forget about IRST.

Would that show up if the proper logs were posted as per post #13?

Yup! - MGADiag is much better - at least that's how I normally spot them.
The problem really, is that I know that the drivers themselves aren't actually the root cause - it's simply by far the easiest way to fix it, without going into immense bits of detail about uninstalling, clearing, and reinstalling basic drivers.
Cloning a Windows partition/drive from one HD to another is very often the actual cause (especially using Ghost or Acronis), but going through DM, deleting entries/drivers and forcing re-installs is more than most OP's can handle, so I chicken out and recommend installing the latest reasonable version of the IRST drivers.
That works for around 80% of cases - most of the rest are cured by clearing the CATROOT2 folder.... and the others generally need a repair install, in my experience.

Cloning a Windows partition/drive from one HD to another is very often the actual cause (especially using Ghost or Acronis)

A clone is an exact copy.... at least on NTFS level. Most cloning software modifies the registry and bcd store as well, so they are pointing to the correct C drive and OS partition.

Ghost doesn't do that last step. Acronis does. Macrium reflect does.

But cloning software doesn't tocuh anything else...so no drivers will be updated.
