Hey friends,

Thought i'd give you a heads up on what's happening with my system, it's dying, slowly.

Yesterday I was doing some indie gaming and with my headphones on, I didn't hear the noise coming from one of the fans, I promptly decided to tear my computer apart to find out where the noise was coming from, I cleaned out all my fans, including my 200mm fan which has never been cleaned in 6 years (due to inaccessibility), anyway, I found out that the fan which was failing is my chipset fan, pic below:


as you can see, it's a specific fan which I can't get hold of any more as the board is no longer in production.

now for the longest shot of the entire planet earth, does anybody have any of these fans lying about? Mobo model is CK-132-NF78-A1 by EVGA.

You might try contacting the mobo manufacturer although that's a long shot as well. Beyond that, some people rig up things themselves like these folks. Posts #2 and #8 may give you some ideas.

never considered using a standard 60mm case fan as a replacement, might work as the northbridge doesn't use a heatsink, just a fan attachment (non standard of course), now to get me a 60mm fan haha.

One of the good things about a custom build is you already know your way around inside the box; just sometimes we need to see what others have done in a given situation to get the creative juices flowing again.

The only thing I would be careful of is the overall airflow in the case. I've seen some hang a fan down in the middle of the case which can be fine, but I'd want to give thought to what it was doing to the overall air flow direction in relation to just how other fans were pushing/pulling air.

well, with my case, it's difficult to regulate the air coming in with the air coming out, I have 2 front intake 120mm fans, one 120mm rear exhaust and a 200mm top exhaust fan, which is negative air pressure, unfortunately it causes a lot of dust in a short amount of time, the fan in question is a chipset cooler, it gets plenty of air flow from the case fans, and the exhaust air is surprisingly cool, however, I will need a fan to cool it, I don't have any fans which have standard fan connectors right now, or i'd cowboy it for the time being, right now, the only fan I have is the CPU fan and that's a Zalman CNPS9700NT Nvidia edition, and that's being used for the CPU.

Do you have a old ram cooler like comes with some Corsair or Kingston ram. The fans are close to the specs.

I did have but I removed them because they were vibrating and being noisy, it was the corsair RAM cooler that comes with the dominator series of DDR2, the RAM doesn't need cooling because it's not being overclocked, in fact, my RAM is rated for 1066Mhz and it's running at 800Mhz so it's fine.

I suppose really it's time to sling this pile of crap in the trash, it's doing me fine but Indie games are my system limits, I'm a gamer haha.

I did not say to cool your ram, under clock or over clock your ram. I don't know how we got there.

Use one of the fans from the ram cooler you no longer use to replace your bad fan on your chipset.
It may or may not fit. Velcro or plastic ties may be needed.

I don't have it anymore, I threw it out when I moved.

Maybe you can just secure one of these with some added support to keep the air focused on the point you want.

Thanks for that JRockZ, that won't work, the chipset is more of a triangle shape and the cooling fins are obstructing the GPU slot:

I think i'm going to get some zipties and a 60mm fan, it seems to be able to do the same thing as the stock fan, no heatsink means that it's just air blowing through the fins.

What's surprising about the whole situation is that someone else was suckered into nvidia chipsets lol, we are chumps for it, my Mobo doesn't even support basic S.M.A.R.T. functionality, and never will

I want an nForce 780i motherboard so badly but my case is just m-ATX so i am stuck with a ASUS P5KPL-AM or Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L

Just to add insult to injury, I've just had an error i've never seen before,

Windows detected a hard disk problem. Back up your files immediately to prevent information loss, and then contact computer manufacturer to determine if you need to repair or replace the disk.

This is just getting better and better

Well at least the two issues aren't related. It's paramount to have a back up strategy with all important data. The other is just a cooling issue that should be an easy hack to get you by till you've saved the the next build.

Surprisingly, the fan isn't making any noise now, maybe it just needed wearing in again, I took it apart and fully cleaned it, since then it's been rather quiet, I'm kind of thinking my cleaning regime isn't as thorough as I thought it was, as far as the disk errors go, I've backed up all my important data, but if this drive goes, I'm screwed as I don't have another bootable drive to use, maybe one of the cables is loose, I'm going to check and double check and replace the sata cable.

You could also buy a new drive of the same size or larger and image the old to the new one.

I'll probably do a fresh install on an SSD or an SSHD, I've replaced the cables and it seems to be running fine.
