Am I missing something? You can download IE8 easily from Microsoft Download page.

Where have you been looking?

Sorry to say but I think you are now missing something. The link I gave is the official Microsoft download site. That is the site where you download IE8, whatever version of Windows you have. Open the page from Windows 7, it says IE8 for Seven, open it from Vista it says IE8 for Vista. But the file you download and IE8 you get for Vista and / or Seven is the same. That is a fact.

Here's a couple of other download sites. Same IE8 but it seems you don't like to download directly from Microsoft:

  • IE8 with Google Toolbar
  • IE8 from Download.com
  • IE8 from Softpedia.com
There exist only two original versions of IE8, 32-bit and 64-bit. Other than that (or modded versions like Google toolbar version of IE8) it is always the same IE8. Works with XP, Vista, Windows 2003, 2005 and 2008, Home Server & Seven.

You asked a question. I gave you a valid answer. If this answer was not good enough to you, you have to continue looking.

Arent MS still going to use the ballot box method of browser choice? In which case you'l be given a choice of browsers to install.

I installed yesterday the official German version of Windows 7 Ultimate x64 which I got in my Windows 7 Launch Party Kit on my HTPC. It is an EU version but after installation I got no browser ballot as I was expecting. Instead, IE8 was preinstalled with the OS.

Well it is a promotional event, so they probably just threw in a normal copy. Rather then taking the time to split it up into 'EU and Non-EU'. Would take longer.

Hi all
A "Promo" / Non retail / special copy is exempt from all the EU Bovine Scatology (Grade A B/S) as its not a normal "distribution" mechanism.

IE8 will be automatically installed.

In any case if I were MS I would go and tell the EU to "make a sexual move with a duck" and threaten to move 50,000 jobs outside the EU altogether. That should wake them up a bit.

In Iceland we'll welcome Microsoft with Open Arms --please come -- you'll certainly get a tax holiday as well.

The EU was meant to be an Economic union with free movement of Labour and Capital (including goods and services) -- not a "super state" with former and current disgraced Politicians being paid millions from ordinary hard working people's taxes to produce the totally imbecillic rulings agains the FEW successful companies who can actually get us out of Recession.

Sorry about the Politics but these people drive me MAD.

Cheers
jimbo

You probably got it from "Technet" or MSDN - this still isn't an "Official Retail source".

We'll have to see what happens when the actual retail packs appear.

I think also there were some issues about the feasbility of actually implementing the EU ruling for the initial distribution of W7.

It could come in later but somehow I think the whole nonsense will be quietly dropped or only introduced in home / individually purchased versions such as Home Basic / Home Premium.

Professional / Ultimate / Enterprise editions can be regarded as "Business Software" and are likely to be exempt from this type of ruling - especially for companies operating in several countries --

These type of organisations certainly won't want to maintain different Windows versions.

Cheers

I couldn't uninstall IE9 from the "uninstall programs" area, but I knew it would revert to IE8 if I could uninstall. I'm new to IE9 so I didn't know where to go to remove it. Thanks so much. IE8 works with virtually every website that I need to access. Thanks again :)
