Computer won't restart after uninstalling Avast software

Sorry, I sent you the wrong article!

Instead do this:

  1. Put CD into CD Drive
  2. Restart PC
  3. On Restart press F12 repeatedly until the boot menu shows
  4. Select CD/DVD Drive
  5. Press Enter
This should work, let me know what happens.

Thank you so much. I have to do some work for my company for a while but will do it as soon as I get back. Please don't give up on me. You are all I have and I really appreciate you.

No worries! Post back when you've repaired from the CD.

I did all of this and now there is a screen that says System Recovery Options and has these options
Startup Repair
System Restore
System Image Recovery
Windows Memory Diagnostic
Command Prompt
HP Recovery Manager

I don't know what to do now. Please help. Thanks. I know it's the weekend so if you don't get this to me until Monday, I really understand. Hope you are having a great weekend.

Pressed Startup Repair and it said "Startup Repair couldn't detect a problem and said that thing about disconnecting any recently attached devices which I had already done. At the bottom of the diagnosis and repair details it says "Boot status indicates that the OS booted successfully" and does not show that corrupted file as it had been showing. Is this because it booted from the CD and not the actual computer?

No, this usually means that the problem may have fixed itself.

To double-check this, we need to do two more things.

  1. On the CD boot, instead of pressing 'Start-up Repair', press: 'Command Line'
  2. Then insert this into the command line: SFC /SCANNOW < then press ENTER
  3. After this has completed, on the next line type: chkdsk D: /r < then press ENTER
After this close the command line and Restart the computer, hopefully it will boot successfully!

P.S: If chkdsk D: /r starts to bring up loads of lines mentioning 'bad sectors' just let it run, this means that it is working.

Let me know how it goes.

Ooops sorry, on my email message there was a *before and after what I was supposed to type so I put that in without *s and now it started and then stopped and says There is a system repair pending which requires reboot to complete. Restart windows and run sfc again.

Restart your computer and see if it boots all the way to the desktop.

Restart your computer and see if it boots all the way to the desktop.

Sorry about a really dumb question but should I leave the disc in or take it out? I left the disc in and clicked on the restart and it went through some gyrations and then that loop thing came up again and said Windows cannot repair this computer automatically.

I decided to go back to starting from the boot disc and F12 and this time went straight to Comman Prompt but when I put in SFC/SCANNOW, it did the same thing about a system repair pending. Am I too much of a problem for you? I don't mean to be. I really appreciate your help and I'm trying to do everything exactly as you say and report what happens.

No, it's absolutely fine! That's what we're here for! :D

Thanks for reporting back, it helps us a lot too. You could leave the disc in, it wouldn't make a difference, just when windows says 'Press any key to boot from cd...' dont press anything.

Okay if it keeps looping, follow these instructions: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/139576-startup-repair-infinite-loop-recovery.html

Let me know how you get on, or if you get stuck.

Thank you so much for these instructions. I have to stop and get something to eat. Haven't eaten all day worrying about this computer and I'm getting light headed and I want a clear head when I start on this. I made one attempt by just letting it start and go into the loop but when I tried to pull up the screen with options, it brought up that box that wants me to sign in as administrator which I am but it won't let me put in the user name and when I try to put in the password it won't accept it. I have to try to get to that screen the way we were doing it before as it let me into command with no problem.

Yes, if you go back to one of my previous posts explaining how to access the boot CD then I'm sure you'll be able to get it to work!

I got back in thanks to your wonderful guide. Got to command prompt and the following is what happened**
Did MD my backup and then Copy *.* and it said 12 files copied
then Regback and it said
volume in drive x is Boot
Volume S/N D60A-0DC2
Then I did Dir of x:\Windows\System332\config\RegBack and it said
7/13/2009 6:33pm <DIR>
7/13/2009 6:33pm <DIR>
0 file(s) 0 bytes
2 Dir(s) 260,313,088 bytes free
The directions under part II of the link say if any are 0 bytes stop and find another way. So I did and now I am reporting back to you for further guidance, please.

**I had done all the other things to get to this point but this is what you need I think. All the rest went as the link said until that last Dir.

I think drive X is the CD drive. How do I get it to read C or D? I only put in drive x after it gave that volume reading of it. It would not take Dir C or Dir D when I put them in.

I went back and looked at the first long listing it went through and it says
979 file(s) 232,637,379
69 Dir(s) 264,847,360 bytes free

then it went back to x:\windows\System32\config and that's when I put in >DIR
Maybe I did something wrong there since I didn't know what I was looking at. Geez this is so humiliating. I will never think I am smart again. Here's a good laugh for y'all - would you believe when any of my friends or family have computer problems they call ME to fix them? Only y'all will know how dumb I really am but I never saw anything like this before. By the way, I'll be 75 next month.

Found some more that might be useful, at the bottom of that big listing of DIR, it says
06/14/2015 1:01 PM 83,128 FNTCACHE.DAT
6/14/2015 1:01 PM 1,036 winpeshl.log
6/14/2015 1:01 PM 40 SetRPDrv.cmd
6/14/2015 1:03 PM 0 dir
and then there was the files and dirs that I quote to you a couple of paragraphs back.

A lot of that stuff in that long listing is dated 7/13/2009 which is probably when Lenovo built it and installed the operating system and then a lot of the stuff is dated 9/7/2010 which is when I bought it and they transferred all my files from my external drive to this new computer. It must have sat in a box for 14 months as I bought it brand new and not refurbished.

Great to know it's coming along!

I believe I just typed in regback or at least that's what I wrote down. At this point, I may have put CD in front but don't know why I would have, but anything is possible. I'm trying to write down everything I do and the responses I get so I can send you an accurate listing.

I followed these directions under 9, 10, 11 & 12 on the link:

CD \windows\system32\config <enter>
DIR <enter>
MD mybackup <enter>
copy *.* my backup <enter>

Yes, after going back to the article you definitely need to type in 'CD RegBack' - This is on step 13.

Apart from that you're doing great at the moment!

Let me know if you get stuck.

If I had looked at the end part of that long listing, it verifies that I put in CD RegBack and then it came back with the answer I quoted that only has RegBack. Should I try to put in CD RegBack again and see what happens? It has this line x:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack> and won't let me change it. But that's what it shows in the Link after the CD RegBack line. It doesn't have CD in it either.

Hmm we need to change your drive letter. At the moment it says 'x' but if you go back in the article then it should tell you how to change it to 'C' or 'D' follow that then type in the commands from my last post. You need to get it to say either c or d (whichever is your drive letter).

Once it shows: C:/... or D:/... Then continue with step 14 and then you're almost there!

I did EVERYTHING right and got all the way through where it said exit and click restart computer and it acted like it was reloading Window files then the Microsoft thing came up and now it has that Startup Repair screen and says it cannot repair this computer automatically. I think I'm going to cry.
