Hi,
Personally I would go with Corsair ram vengeance 1866 or dominator if the budget allows ;)

I put together a new system for someone similar to yours recently and went this way
http://www.sevenforums.com/pc-custom-builds-overclocking/375298-new-build-2.html#post3116426
I went for the 300R case and my cabling may be a bit messy :p but it is performing well and the user is also at Uni and running Grand theft Auto 5 with no problems. I'd probably up the memory to 16GB.
Your GPU is going to give you much better performance but I'm not able to comment on the Zotac brand.

Well the psu seems a bit low you might get at least a 750w incase you want to upgrade your gpu later 600w doesn't give you much headroom for upgrades,
cpu is interesting never seen it before seems to be a server processor not sure if that good or bad ?

Zotac well the gpu's I've look at of them they seem to take a little more juice than other 4gb cards no minimum psu spec's for that one just shows 165w max I'll guess that is what it uses ?

I posted another similar build on the r/buildapc subreddit before coming here. Someone said on there that this CPU is the same as a non overclocked I7-4790k without the integrated graphics but still has 4 cores and 8 threads. Previously, i was going to go for an I5-4690K and a EVGA GTX960 2GB.
The i5 4590 and 4690 appear to benchmark closely. Do you really need to overclock and do you need 8 threads vs 4. I run Handbrake and 8 threads are useful on my main PC. Gamers should comment but I think the GPU and more than 8 GB Ram is a high priority. Also the PSU rating would depend on if you want to run more than one graphics card.

Hi,
Well figure this,
If you want to dual gpu = sli
You'd have 2 of the same gpu's to start with
In this cards case 500w x 2 = 1000watt psu plus you still need some head room so a 1200watt psu

Not really worth it in a old rig.

You could very well get a 980ti version gpu that has 6gb memory and be better served for tomorrows games
But then again I'm sure todays games are more of a focal point
Which 4gb cards are fine for todays games with an older rig as long as the psu can handle it and the rest of the systems needs for on demand power.

Well, what do you recommend?
It all comes down to how much money you have to spend. The user of the PC I referred to is studying electrical/electronic engineering at university and seems quite happy with the PCs capability. He also wants the 16GB ram because he runs VMs. He'd probably really like a GTX 970 with 4G ram.

this is what i used for my budget build, and my uses are similar to yours. as far as performance goes, i have not had any lag so far, it converts and edits videos fairly fast, and also as far as games go, from the ones ive tried so far, ive been able to play on high settings at 60 fps. your more than welcome to share your input. and if you use the build but tweak it a bit, itd be cool to see how you decided to tweak it
