Would Windows 7 have a chance at running on this PC?

Take a look at the system specs in my profile. Can you tell me if (with a few upgrades, like RAM and HDD) this system could run Windows 7?

Much appreciated,
-BrandonSH.

Hi and welcome to seven forums

Yes. with ram and HD it will run but not with the aero effects. For a bit more on a video card it would. we have ppl running on less. One user is running on a P-II

Hi Brandon, welcome to the SevenForums.

You should read this thread. IMO opinion it won't be easy. Insufficient RAM, out of the date GPU, HD capacity.

I would not even try, but maybe I am too skeptical. Good luck.

I think you'll need 512 mb of ram to install and your current HD will pretty much be full when your done. But Windows7 really surprised me when I installed on my old AMD Athlon 2000+ with 1 GB of ram. Ran better than XP. Here is a thread on some pretty minimal machines: http://www.sevenforums.com/general-discussion/1657-windows-7-old-computers.html
Like I say, a few cheap upgrades and I should have a Seven capable (only just)
I'm quite happy to get some RAM and a Hard Drive if it means I can run Seven! :sarc:...:D

Not knowing the precise model of your T-link, it's hard to say. Here's T-link's driver page, check your model and see if they have drivers for you.

I haven't a clue what model it is, and device manager won't tell me.

All I know is that it's a PCI card and it makes a tiny little arial stick out of my PC.

Remove the card, check the labels. You should find the type. It is something like TL-WXYYYZ, where X is a letter, YYY is a three digit number and Z is one or more letters (G, N or ND).

I don't think it's worth spending money on this system - unless you like challenges. Once you add up the replacement parts and the price for a Win7 license, you are close to the price of a new system with Win7. For $400 you can get a decent desktop, for $500 you get a decent laptop and for $600 a desktop with a 20" LCD screen. Shop around - here is a good place to start ( Deals2buy: Everyday hot deals and coupons ).

According to the info here Compaq Evo D500 Series with Pentium 4 Processors - World Wide QuickSpecs that MB can take an amazing 3GB of PC133 SDRAM!

The big issue is PC133 SDRAM is sooo old! <-- That means expensive!

newegg has 512MB for an avg of $60 or so USD
double that for a GB stick!

So if you keep things reasonable and stick with an additional 512MB of RAM, add a decent AGP 4x video card for around $30-40 USD, and a reasonable HDD upgrade of say $40, I'd say yes go for it! $130 or so isnt a bad amount to squeeze a few more years life outta that machine.

I would not max it out as that would be nearly as expensive as a new PC.

Jeepers.

With 256MB of RAM, I'd question whether it was XP compatible!

Have you tried the Win7 upgrade advisor? It's not foolproof, but you may find it helpful.

I've installed the Win7 RC on an old notebook with 1GB of RAM, and internal graphics that were completely incapable of AeroGlass. It ran well enough.

I'm confused. I thought you wanted to install Windows7. But now I see Vista on your shopping list (with Vista you have a much slimmer chance to get away with your specs. Anything less than 2GB of RAM is a Vista dog).
Just above that post, there is one explaining why I've decided to do Vista. Also, we have a laptop with 1GB of RAM that runs Vista quite well. :D
