Update problem wauserv eating 50% cpu can't change updates settings

The WU updates do some sort of scan/search at the start of the install. Removing the connection to the Internet causes that scan to quickly give up. If you don't remove the connection to the Internet, the scan/search should eventually complete on its own. (It might take hours.) I've done it both ways and I've not noticed a difference in the outcome - other than the time spent completing the install.

I haven't yet started installing these, but it's a good sign. I don't know whether I should install in bulk, or take 10 of them, see what they are, if I need them, install, and repeat 19 times to get all 189. I need to be careful for the 10 update, last thing I need is win10 on a 8 year old laptop.

Opinions vary.

After using the tiny app that Callender suggested, I would let Windows Update install in bulk. The WU process should know the best order to follow.

Last I checked there were only 159 Important updates on the first round not 189.
Did you Exclude Recommended updates in settings from being mixed in with real Important updates ?

I always install those just .NET Framework updates before going to bed. Then I leave the machine switched on overnight.

Thank you, I will also install those at night.

Any other advice? Is there a specific order to install? Are there any updates in the list I should not install at all?

Yea you really shouldn't of installed office yet until all Important updates were installed
Seems you've install 2 versions of office too :/

There is one Important update unchecked

This one needs to be installed first
Seeing that it will dictate if any others will successfully install or if you get a bunch of failed or stalled.

I didn't install. It was already there, since I upgraded from Vista using a manufacturer's disk, it was not a clean install.

Funny you should mention that. The only unchecked update seems to be the most important? Who would have thought?

My Windows copy shows already activated.
