It's time for Microsoft to fix the Windows 7 update slowdowns

Callender....Question...... I went through the list of updates on my computer and the only one I found of those 3 you said to uninstall was KB3075851, so I uninstalled it. But you said "it fixes mess due to KB3065987" which I found also.
So the question is, should I uninstall both of those? (kb3075851 & kb3065987)??

No. Leave it alone unless you've got problems with very high RAM usage during daily scheduled windows update checks.

When I run updates, the search for updates takes about an hour, and after that it takes about an hour for each group of updates I install, whether it's for 1 update or 15 updates, it sits there and looks stupid for about an hour then it starts downloading. The download doesn't appear to be the problem, it's that initial search or whatever it is.

I saw the discussion earlier about KB2990214 being a possible cause of the slow down so I just now uninstalled that one.

OK How much RAM is too much? I have Speccy which should give me a reading. I have 8G of RAM.
I'll run a search for updates and see what Speccy says.

Callender I just ran a check for updates and amazingly it only took 2 or 3 minutes. The Ram usage was 31%. I uninstalled KB2990214 about 10 minutes before running that update check. Course I don't have a stack of updates to run right now, but an update search till now has been taking about an hour! Did uninstalling 2990214 make that difference??? Man if it did, WOW!

Yes that KB2990214 WUC update is known to cause problems. One of the other later WUC's also caused problems for me but I cannot remember which one.

It does seem to be getting better,
My WU settings are Let me choose.

Did the check for updates, gave me 2 optionals within 5 minutes, heck of a lot better than the last 6 months or so.

WSUS Offline Update - Update Microsoft Windows and Office without an Internet connection

I run it and select what I want to update......Vista 7 8 etc Office...dotNet etc. It then downloads the whole lot and I copy all 20gb over to a flash drive and run it on every PC and VM I have. Much easier....
I have spent a lot of money on M$ software over the years, Operating Systems, Map Point, Auto Route, Games, Office and this is the last OS I am going to run. Seriously if it does not change direction by the time 7 is EOL I'll be running Linux Mint with Windows in a VM not updating. Have you noticed how all of the Map programs are discontinued? They don't want you running anything from your machine. They want you to run everything in the cloud. When I used to be an in home tech I was glad the mapping software was on the hard drive as driving around a large amount of the time I got a slow connection and poor signal and this was in flat as a pancake with the odd hill Indiana.

Trying to update a W7 VM.

After 12 hours, I've managed to install KB3083710 (using the stand alone installer).
I've still got 500 MB of updates to download and install.

I guess there is no chance of using this VM to get some work done this weekend.

I'm amazed at the patience of people here, who tie up their computer for days trying to update Windows. Good God, get Linux and stop worrying about it. If MS decides to fix this mess, you can come back. and you can use W7 safely offline for specific programs if you like.

It's not that simple. Linux doesn't offer as many things as windows 7 does.

It's not that simple. Linux doesn't offer as many things as windows 7 does.

Then dual-boot or use a virtual system. You don't have to play this insulting game that MS has decided to foist upon us. You do have options, and you will have control of your computer again.

I exercised my option to stop updating Windows. I just make an image each day that takes 7 minutes rather then waste hours on updates I probably don't need any way.

When they stop offering free Windows 10 upgrades I wonder if they will actually release a fix to remove all Windows 10 upgrade related updates?
