I just received this in my email - using WLM at the moment

It appears that you are currently using Windows Live Mail 2012 to connect to your Out*look*.*com account. Windows Live Mail 2012 does not support the synchronization technologies used by the new Outl*ook*.*com. When account upgrades begin at the end of June, you will no longer be able to receive email sent to your Out*look*.*com account in Windows Live Mail 2012. Rest assured, you can always access your email by logging into Out*look*.*com from any web browser, and you will continue to have access to all your data that is currently in Windows Live Mail 2012.


If you currently use Windows Live Mail 2012, we recommend that you switch to the Mail app in Windows to*day. The Mail app is built in to Windows 8/8.1 and Windows 10, and has a more modern design. To begin using it, simply launch the app and add your Out*look*.*com account.


If you are using Windows 7, you can upgrade to a newer version of Windows to enjoy the Mail app and the other benefits. If you do not wish to upgrade, you can access your account via a web browser, or, you can take advantage of a free one-year subscription of Office 365 Personal, and use Outl*ook 2016 to connect to your account.* This Off*ice 365 subscription also includes other productivity applications such as Word, PowerPoint and Excel. It works on Windows 7, Windows 8/8.1, and Windows 10.


Please take action before Ju*ne 30th, 2016, which is when we’ll begin upgrading accounts that currently use Windows Live Mail 2012. If you have more questions, please find answers to common FAQs in this help article, or you can contact Microsoft support.

Now this seems to me to be yet another example of Microsoft intruding into our lives by forcing us to use yet a different product. Now from what I can see - I cannot make out whether this is going to be a paid for service if so then it stinks. I do not see anything wrong with WLM in fact it is the easiest mail service I have ever used and for what it is worth if the new Outlook service is what we use at work (which I find almost unusable) then I for one consider it to be a retrograde step.

I do not want apps all over my phone, tablet - just be able to receive emails on my computers where I consider I have some form of protection that I feel is not available on the smaller devices. Adding to that the Outlook is presented via a web browser which means instead of clicking on a taskbar icon I have to access the web - unless I am missing something or have it totally wrong

I have just been trying to get use to using 10 and then along comes this nonsense and again making me feel quite antagonistic towards Microsoft, and any apologies for the disruption/change for me is pathetically and really quite cynical on their part and to be honest I think quite insincere - now there is a word that should be struck from the English language in this instance.

Thanks Callender mate so what I thought is true the steam roller keeps rolling on - is there no end to it and I might just try Thunderbird as mentioned in that other thread. I have used it in Linux and it wasn't too bad.

The thing that bothers me is will Microsoft now stop hotmail altogether and we have to use some other client service If so then I am going to lose a lot of data that pertains to my security and programs setups not to mention private conversations say between my soon and I:sarc:

I would have thought that if this information is that important to you, that you would have it all backed up somewhere in a location that you won't forget.

Yep well most of it I have Colin but there are still a mile of emails for example that go back years I like to keep there.

Besides anything else I really do not like Outlook after having to use it at work and am still really annoyed by being told what I can and cannot use when and where I can, and pay for the privilege:sarc:. But you know that from my old threads and postings I am sure.

Update well have just installed Thunderbird and my mails all downloaded automatically and apart from having to find out how tho block senders in TB it looks and reads just like WLM

RE: Backup. If you copy your Thunderbird profile somewhere then you've got a backup.

I know of and use a utility that can browse mailbox databases and save multiple emails. multiple attachments and so on. (For backup copies)

Apparently M$ is making office 365 available to outlook*com customers for free for a year like that really helps. It makes no sense to me that they would cut out live mail but allow other clients such as Thunderbird however that's M$ for you-doing things that don't make sense just because they feel like it. However I wouldn't be surprised if they cut out all other clients except their own. Here is another thread on the topic. Windows Live Mail 2012 will not connect to Outlook.com

Hmm well in that case then one would have to go Linux or heaven forbid it a Mac.

Now I am getting confused here so as I read it the offer with 10 (another flaming app!!) is different to an Outlook using your browser?

It seems they are hell bent on getting very last cents out our pockets and surely using Windows will become more expensive to use than other OS's? It wreaks of then wanting a monopoly on the net - little wonder 10 is "free". It certainly doesn't endear M$ to me and it really is a sad situation to be in.

What do you think outlook.com is John? I have no idea what money out of your pocket you're talking about?

If you have a Microsoft mail account, you can always access it in a browser. They are just upgrading how it syncs and that is what will not work with WLM.

No Microsoft account stuff has been changed, just being able to access it with the desktop application Windows Live Mail.

For the trouble they are offering a free year of Office 365, which includes the desktop application Outlook Mail, not to be confused with Outlook.com which is accessed through the browser.

The mail app on Windows 10 is just that, a mail app called Mail.

Well mate I saw it as an app that was free for a year then subs to and then saw it was accessible from the browser so was not sure of what it entailed. For what it is worth I don't like having to get email from a browser - I would sooner have it as it is now two separate icons on the taskbar so I can flick between them . Anyway I am using Thunderbird instead now and it is as good as WLM though it does ten to block a lot of message content.

I said before we use Outlook at work and frankly I think it is a shambles at least I get spell checks as I type with WLM or Thunderbird as I do it instead on having to go back and check and I think that is how it used to be in the XP days - a ruddy nuisance.

I've always accessed hotmail/ outlook.com via browser it works for me although I do not use it for business
But email alerts have always gone to my cell phone.

Even Office outlook primarily gets pop3'ed to a gmail address with the same cell phone alerts
Way too simple
I do the same in win-10 too no need for a mail/.... app to do some thing that works already

The 1 free year of office 365 is for users to get outlook 2016 as an alternative to the integrated mail app on 8.1 or 10 and for 7 or 8 users. I still wonder why they would shut off WLM 2012 but not other clients. That's typical for M$ to do something like that just because they feel like it. I suspect that they will eventually shut out all clients except their own. This article doesn't state if older versions of outlook will work. Of course they will want everyone to use their newest version.
