Like the title says I upgraded from vista to 7 and I am wondering if there is any relics of vista still on the system? I did use the disk clean up utility with like a 98mb gain but I am wondering if there is any part of vista still floating around?

If I'm reading correctly, you performed an upgrade installation rather than a clean installation? If that's the case, you never really know if something slipped through the cracks...

Is there a specific reason why you're wondering?

If you didnt do a clean install there are many vista remnants. If you upgraded and used the easy transfer wizard win 7 is based around your proevious OS. Ifyou did a clean instal and deleted off the windows. old folder without importing anything yo are clean as a whistle.

If anything remains, there will be no obvious visual indicator of it. And IF anything slipped through the cracks, it's unlikely that it would interfere with anything you do, and even if it did, the only way to fix it would be with a clean install anyway.

Basically, just go about business as usual ... you'll know if something ended up really broken, because the OS's performance will become abnormally crappy. As long as that doesn't happen, you're most likely safe.

Linden

The remnants that are ther you cant remove without breaking win 7. If your vista didnt have any problems you probably didnt bring any with you. The one thing you do want to check is the dates on your drivers. Vista drivers are 1-2 yeards old win 7 4-6 months.

If you need help with that let me know ok?

Thanks for the help everyone

I wasn't really shure what would be left behind but this seems to be cleared up.

I know that 7 (for me) is running great, seriously no problems, and I think it may be running better then vista was on the same system. So, if there is anything left behind it is prob not hurting my comp at this time

Do yourself a favor and go back and do a clean install now before the problems crop up. Upgrades are NEVER a good idea.

As Macgyvr said, save yourself the time, and do a clean install. You may not have any problems now, but down the track you will more then likely hit a wall of never-ending problems, in which you will rip your hair out, and wish you did a clean install in the first place. Do it before you regret it. (Not to sound pushy)

well the problem with that is I don't want to lose my licence keys and pre-installed programs. I am satisfied with the success of the upgrade my laptop has been running solid for 3 days with no problems. I couldn't imagine what could "pop" up in the future that would be an issue. I hear people here always saying it is a bad idea but I have not heard anything definitive so until then I think I will stick with the upgrade.

I couldn't imagine what could "pop" up in the future that would be an issue.

Honestly, there are many scenarios where 'remnants' can cause grief. Like some leftover/stray/wrong registry entries. The scenarios can range from the minor 'nuisances' right up to 'completely corrupt'.

And there are users who will experience zero problems. The upgrade process has been improved quite a lot over time. Whilst still not the best preference, it's not an 'automatic failure' like it used to be.

Fingers crossed it stays that way for you. If you do develop an issue, deal with it as it happens :)

I have never upgraded a Microsoft operating system. It's just a bad idea, period.

I'd say the best case scenario for you would be if you could go 3-4 months before your system totally bogs down and things start to "not work correctly" anymore.

I could only go 6 months on a clean XP install, 9 months on a Vista clean install before I'd have to do a new clean install. I'm an MSDN member and I install a LOT of programming/development tools so that might have something to do with it, but I run a very clean system (no gaming, torrent clients etc). Most people that buy a computer with all the crap that the manufacturer installs on it (aol, symantec products etc) already have 2 strikes against them.

But that's just my experience.

It is my opinion and that of a majority of the users here, that a clean install is the only way to go when installing a new OS... If you are concerned about losing any keys that you are using you can use Belarc Advisor .... a program that will retrieve these keys for you... Download it -=> Here

I hope this helps ;)
