Upgrade Home Premium to Professional? (7)

Hello everyone, I just received a copy of Windows 7 Professional via MSDNAA. I'd like to upgrade my computer which is running 7 Home Premium.

Is there any tweaks that I need to make, as every time I try to launch the Upgrade process via the downloaded Win7Pro disk, it tells me to use Anytime Upgrade. However, Anytime Upgrade says that it can't upgrade to that version of windows after I enter the key given to me by the MSDNAA (it validates fine).

Suggestions?

Thanks :)

Unfortunately, MS wants you to use Anytime to Upgrade between Win7 versions. You are left to clean install if you have another retail version.

However, there is a workaround which is achieved by adapting this popular fix for changing between the Ultimate RC and any other version: Upgrade the Windows 7 RC to any retail version Icrontic Tech

The same principle applies: you carefully change the reg keys to trick installer into thinking you are upgrading over the same version, which is a Repair Install in Win7 and therefore allowed.

It has worked every time tried so far, for many different combinations Starter>Premium, Ultimate>Pro, Premium>Ultimate, etc. All users report good performance.

Thank you very much for this!
it worked very well, took awhile, but it worked. I remember doing this to update between beta and RC versions of Windows 7. I just didn't think to apply this solution to the issue I was having. Thanks again for it :)

You're welcome.

Glad it worked for you and thanks for reporting it back to us.

Worked to repair Home Premium with Pro

I was working on a computer that thought it was Win 7 Home Premium even though it was originally Win 7 Pro on the COA. Didn't realize that till after I completed a repair install of Home Premium. Went to put in the CD key and it rejected it. That's when I realized that the OS was reporting the wrong version. Changing the 2 registry entries noted in the link from Home Premium to Professional let me do a repair install of Professional and now all is right in the world.

Here's the important info: To start, crack open the registry and navigate to the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version folder. In the right-hand pane, there are two registry entries named EditionID and ProductName. Those are the ones to change.

If it had Home Premium instead of the licensed version on the COA then it was most likely installed at some point. I've never seen the OS report itself incorrectly. The question then becomes if the user reinstalled it with a HP Product Key that is now sitting unused, or if it had been cracked by either the owner or the ubiquitous "friend" bearing gifts.

In order to go from Windows 7 Home Premium to Professional you will have to buy Windows 7 Professional. They are about $140.00.

Be very careful where you get it from. Their are many counterfeits being sold.

What`s your purpose for going from HP to Pro, do you want to install more then 16 GB of memory ?

I have older 3D modeling programs on my Win 7 professional laptop that work flawlessly there, but crash on my home PC which has Win 7 Home Premium. I have tried every compatibility mode for them, and nothing seems to work.
I figured it would be cheaper to upgrade my Windows, then it would be to purchase upgrades for the other programs.

Yes you would have to do a clean install.

AddRAM made a good point. If the program will run on Pro it should run on Home Premium.

Their is not much difference in the two. The big thing is with Pro you can run more than 16 gigs of ram.

Well, I definitely have issues with multiple programs (especially older ones.) I wish I knew how to "repair" my Home Premium, but it came pre-installed and I don't have a CD/DVD.

Also, I see "upgrades" for sale on Ebay.
I REALLY don't want to do a wipe/clean install.
The "Anytime Upgrade" didn't require a clean install - is there no way to duplicate that process, even if I have to buy it?

THANKS! I wasn't having any issues with Microsoft Office, however.
But, at one time I had Office 2010 installed, then went back to 2007 (because that's what I have on my laptop)
My point is, that I have installed and uninstalled so many programs over the years on this PC that I probably messed something up.
